Progressive Billionaire Tom Steyer Tells DNC Machinery He Can “Do It” Without Them

pedro-cerrano-with-jobu--e1468798650126From Frank Sinatra who did it his way to Pedro Cerrano in the movie Major League who said, “F— You! Jobu, I do it myself,” entertainment prides itself on featuring a “talent” who bails on their old conventions and grabs independence with both hands “and a flashlight.”

It’s a mixed message, coming from that liberal bivouac. Moving forward is old school socialism. Forward like a wrecking ball or a dozer. While doing it for yourself is the thing “Moving Forward” is meant to crush. So when dirty-coal billionaire turned environmental green monster Tom Steyer announced he’s done donating to the DNC because it “can’t find it’s own ass with both hands and a flashlight” (my words not his) I find that entertaining.

“I don’t have a litmus test on any one thing, but I do have a litmus test for elected officials standing on principle and doing the right thing, looked at holistically. And I want to say that after the DACA vote I have decided not to give anything to the national party committees.”

Around our quaint little conservatarian shop, going back more than a few years, you’ll find a similar message. Don’t give money to the big party, give directly to candidates you support. It’s more efficient and more effective. It’s the very essence of free markets, small government, and local control.

Tom Steyer?

He has announced, at least once, that he intends to buy the US Senate for the Democrat party. He’s a corporatist, an oligarch. The very thing the left despises when it registers as something other than a Democrat. And he’s decided that the Democrat Party is no longer a good investment. That he’s smarter and faster, and by using his own PAC’s (and perhaps a phone and a pen) he can more effectively advance their shared agenda.

Steyer confirmed that his refusal to donate to the Democratic Party includes the Democratic National Committee (DNC), the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), as well as the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). Steyer added that he has not discussed his decision with any parts of the Democratic organizations.

The DNC loves him anyway. They love what his third-party political machine does. And their candidates are happy to cash his checks and add his doubloons to their cauldrons of campaign booty.

But what does this say about the left’s wailing and gnashing of teeth over their flagship issue of getting “money” out of politics?

It tells us what we already know. Like most things, Democrats “claim” campaign finance reform is about getting money out of their opponents politics. It is about making it harder for people who may not support them to navigate the system. It is about intimidating them into staying out of the game,  silencing any investment in speech they oppose because the cost of doing it wrong (lawsuits, lawyers, fines, court dates, bad PR) appears worse than trying to protest the government-first message of the progressive ruling elite in “both parties.”

The left wants to keep your money out of politics so that the only compelling voices are lawyers, lobbyists, and deep-pocketed corporatists like Tom Steyer.

The money issue is about silencing speech they oppose, and Tom Steyer’s money is “speech” of which they approve, so this doesn’t count.
