Government enforced “safety” – the antithesis Freedom?

One example (emphasis mine):

AR-15 MagazineAccording to the Los Angeles Times, Newsom said the ban will “help prevent the occurrence of high-fatality gun massacres, and … [will] reduce the bloodshed when these tragedies occur.”

Note that Newsom’s claim contains an admission that the ban will not stop “high-fatality” attacks altogether. Rather, it is yet another in a long list of California controls that is promulgated in the name of safety, only to result in diminished freedom. The loss of freedom would result from the fact that only law-abiding citizens would follow a “high capacity” magazine ban, like any gun law, and law-abiding citizens are the very people who are not misusing “high capacity” magazines to begin with.

This was not lost on Judge Benitez, who said he blocked the ban because its implementation would have meant “hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of otherwise law-abiding citizens [would] have an untenable choice: become an outlaw or dispossess one’s self of lawfully acquired property.”

The Left is all about safety, but in almost every case, it removes citizen choice.  Remember, the number of choices that we can individually make is the true quantification of Freedom – loss of choice is a loss of freedom.  Period – it cannot be argued otherwise.  Often, the trade-off is crafted in terms of “the common good”; really what it often ends up with is that the promised “safety” never really appears but the enlargement of government in terms of more expense and growth of the bureaucrats DOES appear – forever.  The same as with the incremental diminishment of our freedom – that slice, no matter how thin,  is also forever.
