Independence Day – Go thank a Founder

WTC Firefighters and American FlagOK, obviously not in person but perhaps a moment or two of reflection.  Too often, I believe, we take what we have for granted in this country – and I don’t mean the material blessings either. More to the point that our country was found on the idea of Individual Liberties encased in our foundational philosophical document – the Declaration of Independance.  It holds, contrary to all political thought at the time, that our allegiance was not to a particular plot of land nor to a King and his aristocracy and cadre of nobles.

No, just as with Luther’s Reformation, just as the death of Jesus on the cross that ripped the Temple curtain of the Holies of Holies which proclaimed that we have a direct path to God and not have to go through a mass of priests and layers of organized Church(es), they proclaimed that instead of being ruled by a Government, we were to be our own Government – the idea of self-government was a heretical, literally revolutionary, idea.

One that gave birth to the most rich, most powerful, and most important, most free nation the world has ever known.  They are not, as the Left would have us believe (and teaching our kids in schools from pre-K to Ph.D) just a bunch of old white men (actually, while being white were mostly younger men They knew history, philosophy and contra to all of what the atheists say, trusted our Creator God.  Which in and of itself, drives the Socialists crazy as it meant that they believed in a Power greater than themselves (as opposed to a “government over us all”).

Sadly, I am not sure that we have lived up to the Legacy they bequeathed us.  All indications by the studies I have seen show our levels of Freedom falling – mostly from a Government that continues to grow in size, in cost, in intrusiveness, and over the last decade, in arrogance and an inverted  sense of noblesse oblige that sometimes turns downright nasty and condescending.

This is the day that I hope you enjoy time with family and friends with food and good cheer – but remember that what we have can be gone, as Reagan said, in a generation.  Consider carefully what they have given us, the sacrifices they made of their fortunes and their lives.

Freedom is never free as the saying goes.  We must be, as the Left says, be ever mindful that while ideas are powerful, they can be diminished by those that don’t believe in them.  Consider that toay.

Then act on it.
