Senator Sponsoring State-Sponsored Gambling Monopolies – A Stupid Idea For Which The Time Will Never Come

Casino -- diceLike a junkie who needs a fix, Liberal Lou D’Allesandro is chomping at the bit for another shot at a state gambling monopoly. Who would have guessed that the fake news promise of tax riches for all would subside in Manchester’s Tax and Spend Lou.

Once again Senator Casino is trying to rally support for a flock of gambling lobbyists who will certainly shower pro-gambling Legislators with campaign donations. (They are the only ones who really benefit from a guaranteed income.)

Here is how I will best describe what a state sanctioned gambling monopoly would do for New Hampshire – in the words of a 300lb pro-gambling, tan leisure suit wearing, speaker at a past legislative hearing I suffered through years ago.

Hudson’s Senator Clegg was chairing a hearing on gambling – with magical gambling revenue in NH. After hours and hours of testimony and torture the hearing was coming to a close. There were no more speakers signed up and Sen. Bob Clegg asked if anyone else had a comment. That is when Mr. Pinky Ring raised his chubby hand and said: “They told me to say nutt’n but I have to say dis. If youse guys pass gambling there will be plenty of money us – and plenty of money for youse.”

I couldn’t believe what this guy had just said and looked up at Bob Clegg, who was looking back at me, smiling. Sen. Clegg said that would be the final speaker and closed the hearing.

Timing is everything – most of the time. This time it was perfect. No gambling bill.

But here we are, back at the table, sweaty hands clenched in tight little fists just waiting for the free money. The more the false promise of steady gambling revenue – even through a state monopoly – is exposed as a crappy crapshoot, the more some legislators try and poison our state with it.

Sen. Lou is stuck in a “Its never the last time – time machine.” His argument for entering this dark place is so people can enjoy themselves in New Hampshire. How about having New Hampshire be the place people go to so they can get away from gambling, and broad based taxes, and burdensome regulation, and liberal politicians who claim to know that gambling revenue will rescue NH from hard choices in State budgets – when the opposite has been proven in state after state for decades.
