Governor Sununu Signs Parental Rights Measure

Chris sununu

Gov. Sununu signed HB103 today, a bill that allows parents to review and opt-out of sex-ed curriculum. More specifically, it is AN ACT relative to school district policies regarding objectionable course material.

IX-c. Require school districts to adopt a policy allowing an exception to specific course material based on a parent’s or legal guardian’s determination that the material is objectionable. Such policy shall include a provision requiring the parent or legal guardian to notify the school principal or designee in writing of the specific material to which they object and a provision requiring an alternative agreed upon by the school district and the parent, at the parent’s expense, sufficient to enable the child to meet state requirements for education in the particular subject area. The policy shall also require the school district or classroom teacher to provide parents and legal guardians not less than 2 weeks advance notice of curriculum course material used for instruction of human sexuality or human sexual education. The policy shall address the method of delivering notification to a parent or legal guardian. To the extent practicable, a school district shall make curriculum course materials available to parents or legal guardians for review upon request. The name of the parent or legal guardian and any specific reasons disclosed to school officials for the objection to the material shall not be public information and shall be excluded from access under RSA 91-A.

The government education industrial complex hates it, but not for the reason you’d think. Yes, they whine and complain about the time and effort involved in addressing every parents whim but the real issue is control.

  1. They don’t want parents modifying their precious curriculum.
  2. They do not want them to see that curriculum at all.

Modern Ed schools train teachers to think of parents as barriers to education, not partners.

Involved and informed parents are more likely to deprogram their kids after a day at the edufactory.

Parents who know what is being taught are more liable to question it. Too many questions lead to decisions like pulling kids out and moving them to private or charter schools or (Gasp!) Homeschooling.

(Dramatic crescendo!)

The secret public education formula is that it’s not about education or standards at all. It is an opportunity to create an army of well-paid progressive programmers and a bureaucratic army who support the system that supports them. I’m talking about the adults. Learning is more of a gauzy side-effect, not that it’s learning by any standard an adult educated outside the progressive universe would understand.  HB 103, for its part is a tiny ultrasound that peeks in on the process, and the Educrats will do everything in their power to bypass the law until they have the opportunity to unmake it.

It goes into effect in 60 days so districts will have until the new School year to adopt and deploy policies to address the requirements.
