Tuesday, April 4: Hearing on Education Savings Accounts
Action Item: Attend Hearing on SB 193; Contact House Education Committee Members and Urge “Ought to Pass”

The House Education Committee will hold a hearing on SB 193 on Tuesday, April 4, at 10:00 a.m. in room 207 of the Legislative Office Building in Concord. The Senate passed this bill on March 16 to allow Education Savings Accounts, which would help families exercise school choice. Now, House Education Committee members are under pressure from a teacher’s union to oppose the bill.

Cornerstone supports SB 193 as a tool parents can use to help provide the education best suited to their children. Please encourage committee members to trust parents and give parents the tools to select the best options for their children.

Also in House Education on the same day, the committee will hold a work session on SB 43, relative to non-academic surveys administered to students. Cornerstone supports SB 43 and will continue to monitor its progress.

Other Pending Legislation
The House is shifting its attention to the state budget. Cornerstone will be listening to the debates.

The House Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs committee has voted to retain SB 224, a ban on so-called “conversion therapy.” That means that the bill will not come up for a full House vote until next year. Cornerstone opposed SB 224 and its companion bill, HB 587, which was also retained in committee.

SB 66, fetal homicide, has not yet seen further action by the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee. Cornerstone supports the bill.

SB 154, making oral contraceptives available without prescription, has been re-referred to committee (retained) by the Senate. Cornerstone has the same religious-liberty concern about this bill as we did about its House counterpart: no over-the-counter (OTC) oral contraceptive provision is acceptable if it forces taxpayers with religious objections to contraceptives (including abortion-inducing drugs) to pay for or subsidize the drugs in any way for any user.
