Federalism – who knew before the election Trump was a fan???

…the main emphasis of NH Speaker of the House Bill O’Brien, that his main role was to devolve power from Concord and send it back to the citizens and next level down of government and to individual citizens:”

Now, President Trump is sympatico with Bill?  Liberal heads are exploding (and then immediately self-composting) as Trump said the following at the Governors Dinner last night (emphasis mine, reformatted):

We’re going to give you back a lot of the powers that have been taken away from states and great people and great governors, and you can control it better than the federal government because you’re right on top of it,” Trump said. The president delivered a speech at the National Governors Association meeting on Monday.

He explained that more states needed to compete for the best solutions around the country, citing the importance of citizens holding their state governors accountable.

They know the best how to spend their dollars and how to take care of the people within each state,” Trump said, referring to state elected officials. “And states are different and people are different. So the governors are going to have a lot more decision-making ability than they have right now.”

I have railed against the Administrative State (now being called the Deep State) for years.  For years, Republicans boasted that they were for smaller Government – and did nothing.  Even during the short duration of his Presidency, Trump is already showing up the do-nothing GOPe-ers who rode that as campaign fodder and then shoved their thumbs up their butts afterwards and did nothing. Trump’s not just saying these words – he’s already taking steps to defang and cut the overblown and bloated Admin State down in size, power, and intrusiveness.

And now he’s telling the States’ Governors to get ready.  And he is absolutely right in doing so.

All he’s doing, to the Progressives’ dismay, is returning to one of our Republic’s Pillars – Federalism in that the Feds were created from the States and not the other way around and that the States were to be where most of government was supposed to happen. Each was to have a distinct role in our Republic.  However, during the Progressive era (er, has it ever stopped??), the Federal govt started grabbing power away from the States and centralized it in DC (with the Feds having the money to implemented the ill-named coercive cooperative Federalism otherwise known as “Do as we tell you THEN we’ll give your money back – with strings attached”. It’s also a Pillar of traditional Conservatism – keeping political decision making as local as possible (Progressives HATE this idea, btw).

You know, other than Bill, I haven’t seen another Republican leader with the power to make it happen do so.  You may not like his style but you gotta like the results unfolding before us.
