Notable Quote – Jeff Jacoby and the Right to Free Association

Tolerance and pluralism are important values in a free society. So are choice and association. Your choices may not be mine; my preferred associations may not be yours. In a diverse, live-and-let-live culture, our differences are manageable — as long as government doesn’t interfere. The state can’t force Elton John to take a gig he doesn’t want. It shouldn’t be able to force anyone else to, either.

-Jeff Jacoby (Boston Globe columnist)

But, so it seems, if you are a Christian baker, florist, photographer, bed-and-breakfast owner, or wedding chapel operator, the State will, with the screams of the gay mafia, force the ordinary people to “take a gig” they do not want.  And the Left is perfectly fine in have local, State, or Federal Government force Individuals to go against their conscience for deeply held religious beliefs. Don’t let me forget the coercion that Obama and his pack of Progressives have forced me to support (via my taxes) abortion against my religious beliefs via the HHS “regulation” (that comes with the force of law) by redefining the English word “access” to now mean abortifacients must be “free” to those that want it via Obamacare.

Yet, when the shoe is on the other foot, as we are seeing with their candidate having been kicked to the curb by the American “flyover” public in favor of Trump, all of a sudden that long neglected clause of the First Amendment has become very, very important.  This tweet says it well:

seandavisconsciencebigotry

(Image H/T: Instapundit)  And more “of the Left” decided to say “not for me but make THEM do it”:

  • Rockettes should not have to perform at Trump’s inauguration
  • Anthony Bourdain has announced that he won’t eat at any restaurant hosted at Trump Tower
  • fashion icon Andre Leon Talley has said he won’t dress Melania anymore
  • artists whose products hang in Ivanka Trump’s apartment have asked her to remove their art.
  • And a “place of public accommodation”, Honolulu’s Cafe 8 1/2, has said (like Skowhegan, Maine propane dealer) that it will not serve Trump supporters: “If you voted for Trump you cannot eat here! No Nazis.” (yes, a failure of Godwin’s Law)
  • A grocery store cashier refusing service to a lady for simply wearing a “Blue Lives Matter” t-Shirt.

But will they collectively cut a break for those on the Right that have been under this lack of recognition that Free Association is a Individual Right in the First Amendment?

Please, get real – of course they won’t.  The one thing that the Left has taught me over the last 10 years is that there is NO reciprocity in this issue.  They will wail like buttheart 2 year olds when they are getting skewed but nary a syllable when the feet changes positions (e.g., the US Senate “nuclear option” on the filibuster – OK for the Democrats to use it BUT HOW COULD THE REPUBLICANS DARE USE IT IN A SIGN OF BIPARTISANSHIP?!?!?!?!) (e.g., Obama warning Trump not to use Executive Orders – Hahahahahahahaha!).

They are bigots
