Not to be celebrated but truly is an indictment of our current culture: Post-Truth

‘Post-truth’ chosen as Oxford Dictionaries word of year

LONDON (AP) — Oxford dictionary editors have chosen their word of the year: “post-truth,” a term sometimes used to describe the current political climate.

Oxford Dictionaries said Wednesday that use of the term rose 2,000 percent between 2015 and 2016, often in discussions of Britain’s decision to leave the European Union and the campaign of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. It’s often used in the phrase “post-truth politics” and is defined as belonging to a time in which truth has become irrelevant.

If you are a person that highly values a high standard of morality, that results stem from that and “do the right thing” rather than “the end justifies the means” (which generally means “not much morality present”), this is both dispiriting and dismal.

This is the culmination of decades of “your reality is not my reality” – the diminution of absolute truths and the raising up of The Narrative (regardless of any truth in it at all) and relative moralism (which is to say, little morality standards at all).  If we cannot agree, absolutely, on what is truth then ANYTHING is possible and ANYTHING is permissible and ANYTHING is justifiable.

We’ve sunk to a new low.  An adaption of one of my favorite movie lines*: If everything is good, then nothing is bad.  If there is no truth, then there are no real facts.  Without facts, there is no truth.  With no facts, there are only feelings. Which, it seems, is the coin of the realm in current society – MY feelings trump anything you can say – or feel.

Buckle up, boys and girls, we’re in for a VERY bumpy ride…
