Since it is October and the Clintons are running for president again it might be time to re-visit how this running for office deal really works.
Take Gary Bauer for instance, circa 1999.
Mr. Bauer Had his “October Surprise” courtesy of the Washington Post. It was a no-win deal for him. Gary Bauer was caught, hands down, unequivocally, unapologetically, having meetings in his office with the 27-year-old friend of his daughter who was working on his campaign.
Two of his “loyal” campaign staff went public with the raw details – Bauer repeatedly went into his office alone with this young lady and he was warned by his loyal campaign staff that this looks bad. It was so bad they talked to the press – like any loyal staff would do.
Gary Bauer’s goose was cooked. The press wanted to know about the affair, he didn’t want to fire the assistant, etc., etc., you know the drill.
One of the loyal staffers was so upset he went to work for the Forbes campaign, for no wages. I bet he feels better now.
I was at that same office in 1999 before this atrocity was exposed by loyal staff. Here is how it looked to me.
You walk in a short hallway and in front of you is a big glass wall with a large room behind it. In that room two people wave to you. I was told it was Mrs. Bauer and his mother-in-law who had a large table full of mail they were stuffing, stamping and folding. If you take a short left turn, there is Gary Bauer’s office door. It wasn’t very imposing – just a door.
Now this door where Gary Bauer and his daughter’s best friend were holed up probably wasn’t the best place to carry on an affair, seeing that Mrs. Bauer could simply walk 20 feet and open the door to ask for more stamps – but who am I to judge after President Bill Clinton was elected. Slick Willy physically assaulted women and carried on affairs inside the Oval Office – but no loyal staff or news media seemed to notice. Nope. Monica would deliver a pizza to the President and spend some quality time with him.
No problem until a traitorous female staffer went public.
Just goes to show you that having women involved politics or any office is dangerous when you are running for the Office of President in October.
Is that the lesson here in 2016 – never be alone with a woman who is not your wife under any circumstances? My how things have gotten better with feminism.
Thank goodness for the always observant Washington Post and good journalism.
And those lucky Democrats. Back then it was easy to derail a conservative candidate with just a hint of a rumor.
Let’s see if it works with a candidate like Donald Trump.
