Data Point – Americans, more and more, hate the idea of “assault weapon” bans

First, let me say again that there is no such there as an “assault weapon” – it’s a made up term used for political purposes by the Left (aka, the Civilian Disarmament clique) simply to call semi-automatic rifles (frankly, I like the phrase “modern muskets” as being more in line of what they are).  No matter – Americans hate the idea that the Democrats are throwing from Gallup:

This must make the Mothers Demand Action gun grabber / banners absolutely miserable – unless all they wanted to do was spend former NYC Mikey Bloomberg’s money for little reason at all.  75% of Republicans are against it, 69% of Independents hate it, and even half of Democrats aren’t all that enthused.  And do not miss the long term slope of all those lines – all are showing that that time isn’t changing attitudes very much at all other than to solidify the idea that the Constitution may actually mean something.

Assault rifles, on the other hand, does exist as they have the ability for selective fire – semi- or full-auto.  THOSE are military grade and not generally available to the general public unless one goes through “extreme vetting” (heh!) and has a boatload of cash to purchase one and then a second one to feed it all the rounds you’ll want to fire).
