Well, it’s nice to have good news for a change

It’s official, measles has been eliminated from the Americas. “More than 50 years since a vaccine became available, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has officially declared measles eliminated from the Americas – not just the US, but the land mass stretching from Canada to Chile, and all the countries in between. It’s the first region in the world to have rid itself of all local cases of the viral disease, and a pretty huge deal for public health.”

This is a big deal – nice news for a change.  But it is the FIRST part of the post at Instapundit that ought to have attention paid to it very closely:

NOW WE JUST HAVE TO AVOID IMPORTING MORE

Frankly, given the track record of the last two Administrations with an essentially open Southern border policy and the resulting “foreign” diseases that have come into the country that we either haven’t seen before or eradicated years ago, I’d like to be ecstatic over this but I’m sure that the sentiment expressed in that last quote is just “dust in the wind”; they’ll allow it back in not directly but by Govt’s push on doing nothing to protect our borders.  After all, part of Ellis Island’s mandate was to quarantine those that had communicable diseases…take it from there.
