Americans for Prosperity Cites Shocking Report that Shows ObamaCare Medicaid Expansion Reduces Work Participation Among Healthy, Childless Adults

MANCHESTER – Americans for Prosperity – New Hampshire (AFP-NH) today cited a newly released Georgetown University study that shows that ObamaCare Medicaid expansion undermines work participation among healthy, childless adults.  The study found a “significant negative relationship between Medicaid expansion and labor force participation, in which expanding Medicaid is associated with 1.5 to 3 percentage point drop in labor force participation.”

“This explosive study demonstrates just how damaging ObamaCare Medicaid expansion is to the work ethic of the American people,” said Greg Moore, AFP-NH State Director.  “For our nation to succeed, we need everyone who can work to get a job and move up a career ladder to realize their American Dream.  Expanding ObamaCare without a work requirement is leaving thousands of New Hampshire citizens behind, causing them to lose out on the opportunity to build important job skills that would help them move forward.”

Earlier this year, the New Hampshire House voted to strip out a work requirement under ObamaCare Medicaid expansion, with House Speaker Shawn Jasper casting the deciding vote to ensure that those who could work, but don’t could still get taxpayer-funded benefits.

“With the release this study, everyone who supports ObamaCare expansion is going to have to justify shrinking New Hampshire’s workforce at a time when we can’t fill the jobs that are currently open across the state,” added Moore.  “We have healthy people who have no motivation to find work because they would lose this new welfare benefit.  What’s tragic is the harm that these politicians are doing to the careers of the people that they have boxed out of moving forward in their lives and gaining the dignity of work.  These officials need to be held accountable for their choice to set back thousands of our friends and neighbors in order to give taxpayer-funded handouts to the politically well-connected hospital and insurance lobbies.”
