Seriously, these three are the top responsibilities of the Federal Government?

trumpcnnI missed last night’s CNN Townhall with the Republican Prez candidates.  As always, Donald Trump made the buzz of the night.  Certainly his utterance on abortion made waves.  Sure, I am a pro-life supporter but even I blanched when I heard what he said.  That said, it’s what else he said that caught my attention on one of my most important question: The Proper Role of Government.  I have resisted the impulse to be a Trump basher given the absolute hee-bee jee-bees he has given the GOPe and shaken up how the issues are being discussed; for that he should be applauded.  However, I did need to blog my displeasure on this.  Anderson Cooper is the interviewer

COOPER: In your opinion, what are the top three functions of the United States government?

TRUMP: Well, the greatest function of all by far is security for our nation. I would also say health care, I would also say education. I mean, there are many, many things, but I would say the top three are security, security, security.  We have to have security for our country so that we can continue to exist as a country. We are in danger. Thousands and thousands of people are infiltrating our country. We don’t know who they are. There’s a very vicious world. We’re living in a very vicious world and we’re doing something that is against a lot of very smart people’s wishes. I can tell you, it’s totally against my wishes.

Yikes – this is why I endorsed Ted Cruz.

From a Constitutional standpoint, it requires that our country be made secure so Trump is right about security bit.  His campaign has been correct about the border: if you have no border, or open borders, you have no country.  Especially if you have open borders combined with the expansive welfare system we now have, dispensing dollars like the snowflakes in a blizzard, as it is a recipe for disaster.  And he’s been addressing what is now being talked about that after a decade and a half, our military assets are plumb wore out and needs to be addressed.  The problem for me is that he’s all about the spending but rather incoherent about on what, how, and when.

And then Constitutionally, he goes off the rails – WAY off the rails:

<snip>

COOPER: So in terms of federal government role, you’re saying security, but you also say health care and education should be provided by the federal government?

TRUMP: Well, those are two of the things. Yes, sure. I mean, there are obviously many things, housing, providing great neighborhoods

Healthcare?  Education?  And he adds housing and neighborhoods as a Federal responsibility?  Oh my gosh. No, these are not Constitutional responsibilities as they aren’t any of the specific enumerated powers given to the Federal Government.  Sure, he’s said that Obamacare has to go but also talks about Government paying for healthcare – cognitive dissonance.  Yes, we have a Cabinet level department, HUD, that stands for Housing (and Urban Development, which is now pushing to become to become the national Zoning Board with the AFFH rule and its mission is to transform our neighborhoods) and a Dept of Education but if one believes that words have meanings and that the Constitution’s words need to be followed more strictly, Trump is wrong – not responsibilities.

But review how this interview started off: “top three functions“.  Sadly, Democrats and Republicans have decided that the Fed should be in those areas so they have become functions.  Given the amount of press, it is clear that, love it or hate it, much of the attention of the Feds is on healthcare and I can say that with the Sustainable Communities Initiative (and other names of other programs all leading up to implementation of Regionalism) is one of the large under-the-radar functions of the Federales.

So Trump may be correctly identifying current functions but he gives me no less stress to see that he would stress those issues going forward instead of canning them altogether (and yes, part of the interview is sending education to the States but with more “stream of consciousness” words, it really isn’t all that clear.

Does Trump have a ghost of an idea of what Federalism is? The reasoning behind the Tenth Amendment? Pass the Maloox, willya?
