Councilor Sununu Votes to Defund Planned Parenthood

Cornerstone applauds Councilors Kenney, Wheeler, and Sununu for their votes on the Planned Parenthood contracts today. A special thanks to Councilor Sununu for voting his conscience based on watching the recent videos released by the Center for Medical Progress. We want to highlight one piece of the debate that Councilor Sununu raised. Alternatives must be sought for the constituents of the Granite State. This is the right approach and must be taken seriously.

Executive Director Bryan McCormack commented, “We are ecstatic with the bravery of these Councilors.  We must call attention to the wide spread practices seen in the videos produced by the Center for Medical Progress. New Hampshire deserves the truth and that can only be provided with a thorough investigation of Planned Parenthood. This is a huge step for the culture of life in New Hampshire!”

The Republican-led Executive Council has rejected roughly $650,000 in state funding for Planned Parenthood to provide health services such as contraception, STD testing and counseling.

The council did approve contracts for family planning services with the Concord Feminist Health Center, the Joan G. Lovering Health Center on the Seacoast and Weeks’ Medical Center in the North Country.

This vote eliminates about a third of Planned Parenthood’s funding, as it also receives money through federal contracts.

I’m not clear on who the money is filtering through and who and what centers are associated with whom, but Planned Parenthood (PPNE) will not be getting taxpayer money from the state of NH. As noted above, Jeanne “BPM” Shaheen will probably back-door a taxpayer funded check to PP like last time. If she does we should remind her, Democrats, and taxpayers, that as a donor state funneling tax dollars to a well-heeled Democrat donor may not be the best use of those returning New Hampshire dollars.

But this was still a win.  I’d say “baby steps” but then…well, you see where I’m going there.
