Statement from UNH President Mark Huddleston on Bias-Free Language Guide
July 29, 2015“While individuals on our campus have every right to express themselves, I want to make it absolutely clear that the views expressed in this guide are NOT the policy of the University of New Hampshire. I am troubled by many things in the language guide, especially the suggestion that the use of the term ‘American’ is misplaced or offensive. The only UNH policy on speech is that it is free and unfettered on our campuses. It is ironic that what was probably a well-meaning effort to be ‘sensitive’ proves offensive to many people, myself included.”

But it is on the University web site. It is part of the digital UNH.edu experience and the guide sits atop a list of options for an entire (expansive) section of the UNH.edu website titled ‘Inclusive Excellence.’
It’s the lead.
And this is no small endeavor. The UNH Inclusive Experience™ pervades the digital air at UNH.edu and if you tour the (Karl Marx) ‘Inclusive Excellence’ bivouac, you’ll discover that a great deal of time, effort, and capital went in to something they are very proud of.
UNH is broadening the role of the Office of Diversity Initiatives and advancing the commitment expressed in its Strategic Plan by introducing The Office of Faculty Development and Inclusive Excellence Initiatives.
Provost Aber says, “The name change and initiatives mirror the national focus on inclusive excellence, which requires strategic, ongoing interactions across campus and in all aspects of university life.”
This is and has been a functioning department in the University, so the Guide is no fluke. This is deliberate and institutional. It is part and parcel to an experience that can and typically leads to limiting free expression and speech by design.
As I noted in my last post on this, it is “an on ramp to tyranny.” And now that it is national news Prez. Huddleston thinks he can just distance himself from it?
But I think he wants to have his SJW cake and eat it too.
UNH wants money from the very people whose speech, culture, and way of life are so “Problematic” that the university has produced a guide with which to re-educate the children of the peasants that so offend them. And he’s got an entire department to work on it. A department whose existence contradicts his claims of a commitment to free and unfettered speech.
They cannot coexist.
Diversity departments are a White Tower vanguard against speech and liberty. They only hhoe one row and it ends at a vitriolic intolerance for unapproved speech. I suspect Huddleston knows that. But he wants his taxpayer bailouts too, so he runs away and hopes it all goes away.
Speech guidelines are part of the Culture of UNH by design regardless of what the current President of the University system says to prevent that culture from keeping the donor checks from rolling in. And I have no problem with that. He can do whatever jig he likes to appease his donors. But under no circumstances should he be receiving taxpayer dollars to backstop a system that can find the extra capital lying around to create and maintain the extensive Inclusive Excellence mind-frack that leads off with the Bias-Free Language Guide.
If you’ve got money for that, you don’t need or deserve any of mine.
