SB 116 Realities - Granite Grok

SB 116 Realities

“The three rules of journalism are 1. Mislead, 2. Misinform, and 3. Misdirect. The news serves to sever you from reality and keep you in Fantasy Land.” ? Jarod Kintz

Senate Bill 116 was destined for the veto pen. While some will call me negative and pessimistic, I rather think I am being realistic. We’ve seen this pattern before…Like Deja Vu all over again. You have a so-called Republican-dominated Senate….Republican-dominated house, and twelve Republicans who voted no. Most Dems voted no…we knew that…But a few voted yes. At the end of the day, there exists no veto-proof majority. Thus, the bill dies.

One degree of difference is the bill. This really was a well-crafted bill. It was clear on its face. And despite it being well-explained, the local media intentionally got it wrong…Mischaracterized the bill and lied about it. Intentionally done? You bet! How can anyone say it was not? Never has there been a time where so many pro-gun legal minds were so highly visible, reachable and available. Yet, they still reported wrong on it. Channel 9 reported the bill as “doing away with pistol revolver licenses.” Concord Monitor asserted gangsters and criminals will be able to carry guns. Last count I had there were seven separate and independent stories with misdirections. How many times was the point made, “If a person cannot open-carry a firearm legally because he or she is precluded by law, they cannot carry one concealed.” The difference is an article of clothing. Press chose not to get it.

Then there is the New Hampshire Association of Chiefs of Police. There is this prevailing view that police chiefs all across New Hampshire speak with one voice when such is not the case. But the voices most heard from are the activist gun control voices of NHACOP, a number of those chiefs coming to the Granite state from jurisdictions with strict gun control laws.  One thing I learned about NHACOP is if they have the Governor’s ear, whatever they say is gospel. (Picture the Chief “smug bastard” smirk as I write that.) When it comes to lobbying efforts, the Chiefs don’t have to do much.

One aspect of this bill that was simply excellent was the the advocacy never let up. Billboards, phone calls, Social media, email campaigns…all of it was in play. Despite that, she vetoed the bill. For any future political aspirations, that campaign will take some of the wind right out of her sails.

Finally that ubiquitous, vapid statement made by the Governor in her Veto,

“I support the Second Amendment and I believe that Americans have a right to responsibly own guns…”

The first sentence is every so-called faux second amendment supporters’ reasoning for not supporting a reasonable measure. You can bet a so-called “Assault Weapons Ban” hit the governor’s desk, she would sign it. We can be reasonably assured that the Governor will be taken to task for at least the next month over this veto. NRA-ILA has already posted on the veto.

“Governor Hassan’s veto sends a clear message that she is listening to billionaire gun-control activist Michael Bloomberg over New Hampshire voters,”

The task ahead of us now is to elect governors who will sign the bills. We the people need to stop listening to the establishment talking points and elect a constitutional governor who will listen to the majority of people, not listen to the white noise of the Bloomberg crowd, the Moms Demand Action Crowd and every other progressive who will cheat us out of our constitutional rights. Will you now put in the effort to elect such a governor as you did on this bill?
