Hillary Takes A Mulligan – On Welfare Island!

FourFreedomsPark-From NE Kimberley covered the pitifully low turnout at Iowa watch “parties” for Hillary’s campaign (re)launch event on Roosevelt Welfare Island in New York today, but there’s more – behind every Clinton event, there’s a team of clueless minions carefully choreographing the entire tone-deaf charade.

Hillary'sMinion The Mulligan relaunch was held, along with airport-style security, and a no-fly zone overhead, on Roosevelt Island, previously known as “Welfare Island” which is now a bedroom community housed in Soviet-style mid-rise apartment buildings, and has at its tip, a park named after the four freedoms enunciated by FDR in 1941 (before he got to the whole “second bill of rights” stuff).

imageAs the NY Times noted, Mrs Clinton would “deliver the speech at Four Freedoms Park, a memorial with a grassy tree-lined mall, named after the four tenets that Roosevelt presented in his 1941 State of the Union address: freedom of speech and worship, and freedom from want and fear.

hillary_redqueenThe symbolism *might* excite the progressives, but it should serve as a chilling reminder to the rest of us about what Hillary, The Red Queen, really stands for. (The nanny and daddy state, of course.)

The stories of barely attended watching parties in Iowa were just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the unenthusiastic reaction to the event.image If you zoomed back from the tight shots of the “crowd”, you might have noticed the optimistically provisioned “overflow areas” with jumbotrons (why would you magnify Hillary?) for the excited crowds to hang on every word… Er. Not so much – the overflow areas, like those Iowa parties, were deserted, with nothing but seagulls checking out the screens, and probably wondering why there was no intelligent life down there!

It’s not an easy trek to the rally location unless you happen to live on the island, which is only 2 miles long, but even those living there were not universally inspired to head down to the park for Hillary. It didn’t help that, as is often the case with leftists, the chosen date conflicted with a local event, “Roosevelt Island Day”, held at the plaza further north.

Locals unimpressed (Time.com):

Only people who live on the island, who are no more than a two-mile walk away from Four Freedoms Park where the rally will be held, will have an easy trek. But some locals told TIME they’re not going anyway.

Karine Wong, 48, said that while she wasn’t personally inconvenienced by the event, some of her neighbors were less than pleased. “There are going to be a lot of kids out for Roosevelt [Island] Day, and that’s not a good combination with the number of strangers that will be around,” Wong said.

Little island of Dickensian horrors (NY Times):

The city acquired the island in 1828 [from the Blackwell family who had farmed it], but the name remained Blackwell’s Island while the city operated a prison, a lunatic asylum, a charity hospital, a smallpox hospital, a workhouse and other Dickensian horrors there. The Blackwell farmhouse was used as a residence for some penitentiary administrators.

The city renamed the notorious place Welfare Island in 1921 and began a series of reforms: creating new hospitals, moving the prison to Rikers Island in 1935 and developing a residential community with a new name, Roosevelt Island, starting in 1971. It fulfilled that name’s promise this year when a memorial park to Franklin Delano Roosevelt opened at the island’s southern tip.

(And thus guaranteeing a visit by that other Dickensian horror – Hillary)
