Senate Democrats support updating laws for bankers but not women

banker-government-peopleYesterday Senate Democrats in New Hampshire voted to update banking laws with the passage of Senate Bill 188. Apparently they wanted to update laws that have been on the books for 100 years.

These are the same Senate Democrats in the New Hampshire Legislature who voted against Senate Bill 116 to update a 90 year old law. SB 116 is the ‘Constitutional Carry’ bill that seeks to change the current pistol licensing requirements that are indeed 90 years old. The original intent of the pistol license law was to allow discriminatory profiling. It still behaves the same way today, including discriminatory profiling against women.

Senate Democrats chose to update laws for bankers and refused to update laws for women. Senator Jeff Woodburn (District 1) issued a press release:

Today, Senate Democratic Leader Jeff Woodburn released the following statement on the Senate bipartisan passage of Senate Bill 188, a revision of the state’s banking and credit union laws.

“Senate Bill 188 gives a much needed reorganization and update to our banking statutes that are over 100 years old, difficult to navigate and challenging to understand,” said Senator Woodburn. “This will modernize and streamline the statutes while keeping all of our consumer protections in place.”

“Senate Democrats are proud to support this bill that modernizes and optimizes our laws to make doing business easier in New Hampshire.”

Senate Democrats are concerned about keeping “consumer protections in place” but they aren’t concerned about women protecting themselves from abusers or stalkers or against discriminatory practices. Senate Democrats refuse to restore women’s rights (women had the right to carry a firearm however they saw fit prior to the passage of the pistol license law in 1923) yet they cozy right up to the bankers. Clearly there is a problem in Concord when Democrats completely ignore decades-old laws that hurt women but celebrate changing decades-old laws for bankers.

It should be noted that every Republican in the Senate voted for both this bill AND to restore women’s rights in SB 116.
