Senate Bill 116 Charlatanry - Granite Grok

Senate Bill 116 Charlatanry

“Charlatanry…No psychologist should pretend to understand what he does not understand… Only fools and charlatans know everything and understand nothing.”   —Anton Chekhov

Senate Bill 116, An Act repealing the license requirement for carrying a concealed pistol or revolver, is being put through its usual cascade of lies.

Yesterday, Deidre Reynolds took the the pages of the Nashua Telegraph in a Letter to the Editor  opposing of Senate Bill 116.  Titled, “An Act repealing the license requirement for carrying a concealed pistol or revolver.” She shared nothing. All Non-original Charlatanry.

Reynolds claims, “Concealed carry gun law would do more harm than good,” and Reynolds qualifies her opinion sharing with readers that she is a “gun owner.” Reynolds makes three onerous and misleading claims about Senate Bill 116: 1) [this bill] has absolutely nothing to do with women; 2) SB 116 “does away” with licensing; 3)[the bill would] remove Law Enforcement’s ability to deny “licenses” to inappropriate persons – such as criminals, unstable people, domestic abusers and children. Let us deal with each claim….

Senate Bill 116 has been called a women’s rights bill which, as a woman and gun owner, strikes me as odd since it has absolutely nothing to do with women.

Oh No Guns....and magazines...and ammoWhat happened to a, “woman’s right to choose?” Does not carrying a gun go hand in hand with a woman’s pursuit of self-empowerment and self-determination? A woman’s right to defend herself and her family should she come under attack?  You would assert the second Amendment more important for men? Ultimately,  That statement has absolutely NOTHING to do with Senate Bill 116. Inversely, it re-litigates the very issue of concealed carrying of a gun, does it not?

Long, Long before Gloria Steinem and all the other feminist groups… Even before universal suffrage… was the second Amendment… This isn’t a special women’s lib issue, it’s a woman’s right as an American and was so before the right vote. I think it is a sad commentary on our culture when we have to be reminded that gun rights are women’s rights, and here Deidre Reynolds will insist otherwise. Reynolds IGNORES the bare fact that the largest growing segment of handgun purchasers are women! Back in the kitchen with ya! Ladies!

“SB 116 Constitutional Carry does away with this law and would allow anyone to carry a loaded, concealed gun”

Senate Bill 116 does not “do away” with the license. Senate Bill 116 would not allow anyone to carry a gun. Senate Bill 116 makes licensing optional within the Granite State, for citizens who are appropriate persons to carry guns.   In fact, contained within the bill is a provision that would extend the license from four years to five years. Why have that provision if we are are merely “doing away” with the license?

To completely rid ourselves of the N.H. Pistol Revolver License would effectively eliminate the reciprocity the Granite State has with other states where law-abiding citizens can carry guns. Moreover, this law would not change “who” can carry guns who who cannot. Any prohibited person carrying a gun under constitutional carry, would be the same as any criminal carrying a gun under the current law. These people continue to speak in untruthful scripts and this should cause us to question whether they have read the bill.

Reynolds cites the testimony of Chief Andrew Shagoury of the Tuftonborough Police Department testified…

“This would allow kids – 13, 14 years old – to carry guns concealed because there is no minimum age in New Hampshire.”

This simply is not true and the assertion is made up of whole cloth. N.H. RSA 159:12 deals with this very issue. The title is, Sale to Minors but, as the legislature has created…the statute deals with much more than selling a gun to a kid. Lets look at it…

159:12 Sale to Minors. –
    I. Any person who shall sell, barter, hire, lend or give to any minor any pistol or revolver shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.

The exceptions in the law include,

II. This section shall not apply to:
       (a) Fathers, mothers, grandparents, guardians, administrators or executors who give a revolver to their children or wards or to heirs to an estate.
       (b) Individuals instructing minors in the safe use of firearms during a supervised firearms training program, provided the minor’s parent or legal guardian has granted the minor permission to participate in such program.
       (c) Licensed hunters accompanying a minor while lawfully taking wildlife.
       (d) Individuals supervising minors using firearms during a lawful shooting event or activity.

Just because Chagoury is a police chief does not automatically make him correct. And just because Deidre Reynolds says she is a gun owner does not make it so. Various gun control hacks and advocates predict spikes in gun crimes. The streets will run red with blood of innocent victims, goes the ubiquitous din of Gun Grabbers and “Restricionados” of each flavor and brand. They conveniently ignore the data from other states who have undertaken constitutional carry, expecting us to not pay attention. Opposition to this bill is little more than the fodder and oats of Restricionados and Hoplophobes.
