Is Rudy Right? And Why is the Left Freaking Out Over It?

When you go around criticizing Sam incessantly, apologizing for Sam over and over again, publicly hound Sam on his past failings it should come as no surprise that the people who see this behavior would conclude: “This guy is really not a fan of Sam.” And that’s precisely what Rudy Guiliani did this past week. He called it as he saw it when he stated that he doesn’t believe Obama loves America. This, as you can imagine, caused the Oblunderphiles in the media and elsewhere to go into frenzied huff.  “Sad to see what a lunatic Rudy Giuliani has turned into”, “BREAKING: Rudy Giuliani still a terrible human being,” or “Rudy Giuliani dives into Dinesh D’Souza’s anti-Obama dumpster”.   Oddly when Senator Obama said President Bush was unpatriotic, it was met by the same press and the progressives elsewhere with a giant yawn. Go figure.

Big deal a private citizen thinks Obama doesn’t like America.  Why the foot stomping hissy fit?

Well, besides the usual hypocrisy from the left, what’s also at work here is a little panic. I think they’re in a pique and are trying to turn the tables on this because Oblunder is no longer trying to hide his disdain for the country he perceives himself to reign over and he’s going full bore Obama (boar?). Which leaves his followers scrambling for cover because they need to elect another Big Gov progressive statist. And in order to do that, they must keep hidden their true beliefs and sentiments as usual. So sling dung to distract from the substance of what was said.

And there is something to what Rudy said.

Progressives do not like this country. Never have. They don’t like the Constitution, they don’t like liberty, they don’t believe in private property, the list of American characteristics that are repugnant and anathematic to the progressive mind is quite long. But, like I said, they can’t be honest about it, because they’d never get into power to “fundamentally transform” it if the boobs catch on.

So they the must produce a stable of Trojan horses, paint them with faux beliefs du jour that will win them favor with the electorate and stampede around the public debate claiming to hold beliefs they really don’t. For an example of this type of deceit, we need not go any further than this week when Obama political strategist David Axelrod disclosed that Obama lied to the nation when he said he was against gay marriage. He lied for political reasons. They always do. The ends matter for the progressives, and any means to achieve it is a viable one. Ethical or not, morally or not, it does not matter.

But now, Oblunder has stopped lying. He’s out of his horse because he no longer has to disguise or conceal his true beliefs and convictions. Grubering is for progressive candidates and potential candidates. Obama has rolled down, unsheathed and freed his spent Gruber and discarded it. It is no longer needed to protect his special purpose. (As a reminder, Grubering comes from Jonathan Gruber who was an instrumental architect of ObamaCare and who helped it to pass by disguising its details because he believes “Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage,” translation: don’t tell them what you’re doing. Again it’s the ends that matter.)

But as to Rudy’s statement itself, personally, I think it’s spot on. I’d like to say why but I’ll reference Kevin D. Williamson (who’s more and more becoming my favorite National Review chap.  He has a must read on the odd Marie Harf statement this week. I encourage you to read it. It is indeed enlightening and I found it changed my perspective on our system of values). Anyway I digress.

Here are some snippets from Mr. Williamson’s article on Rudy’s statement.

Does Barack Obama like America? The people around him certainly seem to have their reservations. Michelle Obama said — twice, at separate campaign events — that her husband’s ascending to the presidency meant that “for the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m really proud of my country.” She was in her mid 40s …. Barack Obama spent years in the Reverend Jeremiah Wright’s church as the churchman fulminated: “God Damn America!” … A less raving version of the same indictment can be found in the president’s own speeches and books. His social circle includes such figures as Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, who expressed their love of country by participating in a murderous terrorist campaign against it.

Does Barack Obama love his country? Call me a rube for saying so, but it’s a fair question.

For the progressive, there is very little to love about the United States. Washington, Jefferson, Madison? A bunch of rotten slaveholders, hypocrites, and cowards …. The Declaration of Independence? A manifesto for the propertied classes. The Constitution? An artifact of sexism and white supremacy. The sacrifices in the great wars of the 20th century? Feeding the poor and the disenfranchised into the meat-grinder of imperialism. The gifts of Carnegie, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Morgan, Astor? Blood money from self-aggrandizing robber barons.

There is a personality type common among the Left’s partisans, and it has a name: Holden Caulfield. He is adolescent, perpetually disappointed, and ever on the lookout for phoniness and hypocrisy… inclined to believe in his heart the declaration that “behind every great fortune there is a great crime.” … He believes with Elizabeth Warren that the economy is a rigged game based on exploitation and deceit … He believes with Barack Obama that the only reason (e.g.) Staples does not pay its part-time associates more .. is so that it can pad its executive pay and protect its “billions” in annual profits. (He believes that Staples, whose financials he has not read, makes “billions,” when in fact it does no such thing.) Say an admiring word about Steve Jobs and he’ll swear that there are four-year-olds working 169 hours a week in Chinese sweatshops producing iPods at the point of a bayonet. He believes that most people get into Harvard and Yale because they have influential parents … that rich Americans mostly inherit their money (in reality, about 15 percent of their assets are inherited, less than for middle-class families), that the U.S. goes to war abroad to enrich contractors at home, and that the entire history of Latin America must be understood through the prism of the United Fruit Company’s maneuverings in 1954.

Sounds about right? Think of a progressive you’re familiar with. The above sounds pretty spot on no? If you’re not sure, start talking with said progressive about the founders and count the seconds until he/she/heshe brings up slavery.  It usually takes under 10 seconds.

Barack Obama has a great, big, heaping dose of Holden Caulfield in him. That and chutzpah: When as a candidate he was in trouble because of his association with the racist lunacy of the Reverend Wright, he responded by giving the American public at large a lecture on racism and its culpability therein, while his minions began proclaiming that the only reason to oppose this politician with the racist associates was — presto-change-o! — racism. But if you believe that the system is basically rotten, that the society that produced that system is basically rotten, that the game is rigged, that your opponents are all phonies and hypocrites, then what’s a little intellectual dishonesty in the service of the common good?

The ends matter, means do not to the Progressive.

There is very little that a man with Barack Obama’s views and proclivities should love about the country,

That’s very true. Listen to Obama’s speeches or read them. Recall his apology tour, the nauseating bowing, the scolding of the American public, the bizarre lecturing on the Crusades and on and on. It’s an odd way to talk about something that you love. By the way, the Crusades schitck betrays both an astounding ignorance of the subject and an equally astounding glimpse of the man’s arrogance and high self-regard. You have to believe yourself divine to lecture people on a subject about which you evidently know very little. That’s takes Brunswick 16’s.

So, do you think Obama loves America? If so, why would he want to “fundamentally transform it”? If you think that loving something and wanting to fundamentally transform it are compatible, I have an experiment for you. Go up to your wife or husband or significant loved one, look them right in the eyes and say, “Honey, I love you, but I want to fundamentally transform you” and the see what happens. (H/t Jonah Goldberg for the idea… I think it was his.)  Of course you don’t have to tell your loved one you want to transform them.  You can just lie to them instead, and if they catch you just stomp your feet and throw a hissy fit to change the subject  That’s progressives do.
