Is the Litchfield School District Trying To Pull A Fast One?

The school district clerk in Litchfield can’t certify the ballot for upcoming town elections.  He tells me that the default budget number does not appear to be correct and no one in the School district would talk him through his concerns to a straight answer.  If the ballot is not correct he wont sign off on it.  He wont swear to its accuracy.

The delay has exhausted so much time that now the AG has come after the clerk for the ballot.   If the town does not submit the ballot it can’t be printed and mailed for absentee voters.  The AG probably doesn’t care if it has the right numbers – just put it on the ballot and sign it, please, or something bad might happen.   The School district attorneys have–quick like a bunny–put a name for their version of “the bad.”  Dereliction of duty.  Sign or resign.

Is that telling?  The District can’t be bothered to clear up that default budget number to get the ballot out on time but they know how to speed dial the lawyers when you stick to your principles?  I’m surprised they didn’t call the police and have him arrested.  That’s quite popular with school districts in New Hampshire who are not getting “their way.”

And what is “their way?”  Those sketchy default budget numbers they couldn’t be bothered to clarify just got a whole lot sketchier.  So are they playing games?  Trying to pull a fast one?

I’ve got a growing pile of documents.  We can build a time line.  When I put this together will it look like the district deliberately and willfully delayed any effort to clarify the numbers with the School district clerk knowing that the AG would come in as “the closer” and demand a ballot because they had to have one?

Why do that?

I can’t speak to who has what responsibilities here but the only reason not to have a quick sit down, phone call, pow-wow or whatever, to get all the questions answered, knowing you had a fast approaching ballot submission deadline, is because you didn’t want the questions answered.

More on this to follow.
