An observation by Glenn Reynolds

The Question:

THE GOLDEN QUARTER: Some of our greatest cultural and technological achievements took place between 1945 and 1971. Why has progress stalled?

The Answer:

The Greens and the Luddites got power, just as Nixon initiated the Regulatory Explosion that brought us OSHA, EPA, and various new regulatory regimes, even as money was being diverted to transfer payments to people who didn’t produce anything except votes — from funding the X-15 to funding Section 8. Not a formula for progress.

Commentary:  Simply, we can’t get anything of substance done because Government won’t let us.  It has made everything too expensive and time consuming.  Roadblocks of paper and red tape, kowtowing to both appointed and elected officials enough to tear holes in the knees of the most expensive suits; each and every little thing that has been created under the guise of “we have to protect the public” brings that ever tightening wispy cottony cocoon closer and closer to binding those that can do.

We have probably now become a nation of “Mommy, may I?” bunch of wusses instead of the “CAN DO!” nation that used to beat the world at everything.  No, it is not because our citizens necessarily can’t but that thing that won’t leave us alone (“Government’s the only thing that we all belong to” -Democrat National Committee; golly, no choice in that is there?) is also the thing that keeps tying our hands.
