They impugned him inoffice, they campaigned against him on the campaign trail, they told us they’d rather work with Gene Chandler…. In other words, the Democrats made it very clear that Bill O’Brien would be bad for their agenda and spending plans.
In return, The voters re-elected Bill O’Brien, they elected a significant Republican majority in the State House, and ensured the Senate and Executive Council were in GOP hands, too. The Republican caucus in the House did not listen to blandishments of moderates, they did not pay attention to Governors from the last century, but they rolled up their sleeves and elected the only GOP Speaker in over a decade to actually stand for something.
The Dems aren’t happy – We congratulate Bill O’Brien on a well run campaign, and on having Dems on the run before he takes office.
