Notable Quote – David Friedman

In spite of popular myths about capitalism oppressing the poor, the poor are worse off in those things provided by government, such as schooling, police protection, and justice.  There are more good cars in the ghettos than good schools.

– David Friedman

Above emphasis mine – it is hard to argue with.  We don’t fuss much about cars breaking down an awful lot (compared to when I started driving in the 70’s) or need a whole lot of maintenance.  Sure, they have gotten more expensive – but a large part of that has been the Government sticking on mandate after mandate “for our own good” in one way or another.  But even with that increase, the cost of Education has been dramatically much higher in rate increases with little or no additional “benefit” (higher student achievement levels).  What is the major difference?  Competition.

While there are more options today than when I was in government schools (homeschooling, charter schools, online schools, to name some), the majority of schools tie kids to their zip code due to Government monopoly and that in support by the Party of Government, the Democrats, to keep their favorite political identity group (e.g., teachers unions) from harm (and it isn’t about the kids – just watch what the chants are at any teachers’ strike).
