Hassan Tax Grab Provides An Excellent Campaign Opportunity for NH Republicans

MaggieThe Red makes power grabHer highness, Shahbanu Maggie Hassan, Freiherr of Fracking, Duchess of Philips Exeter,  Raja of Revenues, Empress of EMILY’s List, Potential Princess of Northern Pass, (and N.H.’s own ambassador to the deteriorating nation of Turkey), hath dissolved that part of the state constitution that limits her taxing powers so that she might overburden her people by expanding a levy on real estate transfers, without bothering to deal with that pesky legislature thing…

The Hassan Administration is now claiming that it has the ability to tax leases. This unilateral expansion of the tax has not been authorized by the Legislature, and is not allowed under current rules governing the Department of Revenue Administration. – SRMPAC.org

This Hassan Tax Grab presents us with a most excellent opportunity.

Existing statute regarding lease transfers and the real estate transfer tax, according to the article, apply only to leases of 99 years or more.  Democrat governor Maggie ‘budget hole’ Hassan would like to start taxing all of them.  To do this she has taken a page from the Obama Administration Overreach play-book, and has granted herself, and her officers the authority to tax ground lease transfers at her leisure, regardless of the limitations of standing law.

I wonder if New Hampshire Democrats in the State  legislature, who would happily pass the tax for her, or at least try, will take issue with this power grab?

I wonder a great deal more if any Republicans running for office (in the NH House and Senate, in particular) will call out every Democrat opponent who fails to cry foul at this abuse of the Governor’s executive authority?  (hint, frikking HINT!)

Until such time as every Democrat candidate opposes such moves by the Governor’s office Republican’s should pursue their positions relentlessly, in letter’s to the editor, at every opportunity,  all the way to November.

(And for those who do publicly oppose such power grabs by their Democrat Governor, when should we expect them to publicly oppose similar actions by their Democrat president?)
