Who Said It?
“I’m pretty conservative on a lot of things”

No loud music, please, we're hunting those wascally bears!

Something I hadn’t expected to learn (but why not – not every rock musician is like Springsteen) is that Metallica’s James Hetfield is actually a kinda conservative guy, with credentials that we wish some of our politicians would emulate!

For example, that “pretty conservative” quote came from a 1993 Rolling Stone Interview, entitled “Don’t Tread On Me”! In the article, he also said (Clinton era):

I don’t know what the isms are. I don’t really fit into any political party. I’m pretty conservative on a lot of things. This new tax thing doesn’t make sense to me. I don’t know what the goal is. The middle-class people really suffer for it.
…….
“Don’t Tread on Me” was quotes from military people back in the Revolutionary War….. It’s about a flag, a snake and a symbol. There’s nothing wrong with being proud of where you’re from. There’s some patriotism in there, yeah.

I learned these things when Metallica were signed for this summer’s Glastonbury Music Festival in the UK, and the hippies behind the festival were shocked, shocked, to find out that Hetfield liked guns and hunting, and had, indeed, just been tapped by The History Channel to narrate an eight-episode series called “The Hunt,” which documents a twice-yearly Kodiak brown bear hunt in Alaska.

Hetfield has actually hunted bear, in Russia, too, is a life member of the NRA, and a member of the wetlands conservation group, Ducks Unlimited. (We should introduce Nashua Rep David Campbell to that organization!) Rolling Stone adds that:

Politically, he’s a defiantly individual mix of right-of-center values with a strong dislike of rules – kind of a conservative anarchist.
