Does Walt Havenstein Have A Residency Problem? – Probably Not.

Democrats are questioning Walter Havenstein’s residency because they see him as a threat to Governor Hassan.  Republicans are questioning it because they do not want a primary challenger (and they want Andrew to win/run unopposed) or maybe they think the Dems may be able to effectively sew doubt should Havenstein win the primary.  And yes, there are those who are convinced he can’t run.  Everyone is encouraged to make their case

I’ve already supported Andrew Hemingway, and questioned the motivation for a Havenstein run, but he is entitled to do so if eligible.

To that point, Mr. Havenstein appears to have maintained a driver’s license from a New Hampshire address, and has a voting history to go with it.

Walter P. Havenstein, 112 Dewitt Dr. Alton, NH

Voted Absentee 2006 Primary and General
Voted in person 2008 Primary and General
Voted in person 2010 Primary and General
Voted in person 2012 Primary and General
Walt’s wife Judith has also voted in NH, from the same New Hampshire address, in every election since at least 2006, though she voted in person that year, not absentee like her husband.
Yes, he had property in Maryland, and yes, there may be tax complications related to that property, and yes, that should weigh on the minds of voters, but if he has maintained a domicile in NH, maintained a NH driver’s license, and voted here consecutively for 9 years, while he is still not my first choice for the Republican candidate for governor, I’m not going to question his residency requirement based on this information.
He did exactly what a state resident whose work has taken them outside of their home state should do.  He voted absentee or found a way to get home to vote in person.
Democrats have argued for domicile on much less, so every time they bring it up, I’ll be happy to remind everyone what they insist (vehemently) represents domicile for voting purposes.
