About That Rising Latino Star…

Last Friday Skip took a few minutes to respond to James Pindell’s weekly NH Political Standing report.

Skip asks…

Isn’t it racist to think that just because someone has a Spanish derived surname that they should be able to  speak Spanish?

Being a part of the fourth branch of government might provide Mr. Pindell with a waiver on that, but does he get  waiver on this?

“If you watched Marilinda Garcia, the national Latino rising star, on CNN en Español to check out her Spanish speaking skills… well the station uses an interpreter because she speaks in English.

James refers to Marilinda as a “national rising latino star…”  Latino.  Marilinda is (I believe) half Italian, and half Hispanic.  The latter would, at best, make her a rising Latina star, which might have more weight to it if she actually spoke spanish.  Latino just seems a bit out of place.

In James’ defense, after some research, it appears that Latino can refer to either gender in the general sense of ethnicity and specificity is more a matter of personal preference.   My preference is principles and policies over all else, but seeing as Pindell works for the Fourth branch of government, where walking past cultural pitfalls or on PC pins or eggshells is limited to certain political parties more than others, it was a short journey worth taking.

And if it matters, based on this article on WMUR, most latino’s (male and female) prefer Hispanic given a choice between the two.
