DC Republicans caved: talking “Limited Govt” but giving up on “Unlimited Spending”

What are we doing? Why are the leaders of our party—the party that is supposed to stand for balanced budgets and fiscal sanity—giving up on the fight? Why did our party’s leadership essentially caucus with the Democrats in order to work against us?

Charlie Brown Lucy football2010 was the year that the TEA Party fed furor over the socializing and increasing size & reach of Govt had common everyday people get involved to say “Enough – no more”.  It gave the Republicans in the House, where they hold the power of the purse, a majority. We heard lots of promises during the campaign and a lot of words during the start of that session, among them “limited govt”, debt ceiling”, “spending” and “taxes”.  Fiscal frugality, here we come!

Yeah.  Sure. Charlie Brown in the grassroots and today, the DC Republicans in the House AND the Senate assumed their normal role of Lucy and the football.  Over and over again, we heard from these “brave” solons that we were not to worry – THEY would take charge and implement fiscal sanity.  And today, against all Republican Principle, the Platform, and the promises made during their campaigns and rhetoric spewed the last couple of years, they handed their Constitutional power of the purse over to Obama.  They voted, with no shame it seems, to suspend the debt ceiling (enacted in 1905) until March of 2015.  NO limit, no covenants, no promises from the most UNlimited spending President we’ve ever had.  One that has already spent $7.7 Trillion in 6 years.  And now has his hands completely unbound.  Yeah, this is gonna work out well.

As the Youngest said: I call you cowards.

Indeed. It has already risen $2.7 Trillion under Speaker of the House Boehner (R-tanning saloon) 2.5 years of “debt limiting”. One estimate has the debt that is being put onto our kids’ kids is $18.2 Trillion by that March 2015 date – more than 108% of national GDP.  In 10 years, 2024, another estimate has it pegged, if the current trajectory is not altered, at $27 Trillion.  This keeps up, we won’t see that “unsustainable” end point of the environmental apocalypse we are always being lectured about by our Betters.

The Republicans did get the Sequester and it started to actually work – but then they pissed it away, raised spending now, screwed over our Vets (being a double Blue Star Dad, even if my sons were not in long enough, it left a real sour taste in my mouth even as civilians weren’t touched for “equality” reasons) and want us to believe that their “savings” will happen years from now with this Ryan-Murray “compromise” comprehensive  omnibus spending “bill”.  And then announced that they would not shutdown the Fed govt come this debt ceiling limit day; they WILLINGLY cut their own political knees out from underneath them.

And today, the GOP Leadership in the House broke the Hastert Rule (have a majority of the caucus with you) and the Boehner rule (have cuts in the budget equal to the rise in the National Debt).  As one person put it well (but emphasis mine):

What are we doing? Why are the leaders of our party—the party that is supposed to stand for balanced budgets and fiscal sanity—giving up on the fight? Why did our party’s leadership essentially caucus with the Democrats in order to work against us?

Just like here in NH where the GOP Leadership in the NH Senate screwed over all other Republicans (elected, candidates, and grassroots) when they decided to implement Obamacare, highly angering not only the Conservative base, but many moderates as well.  Here, the DC Republicans have us all going – and we want to support you again in your next elections……why?  And you’re trying to pass Amnesty, against what the base wants….why?

Simple – selfishness.  They care more about their own political careers than they do what is right according to Republican Principles.  They are willing to sacrifice the latter to promote themselves.  Oh, they will frame it other words – anything to distract and deflect what the rest of us plainly see.  We want to support Republicans, especially those that support our beliefs – and not the run of the mill craven politician who loves the title, the prestige, and the power.

And now Obama knows that they are rootless with no convictions – and sooner or later, he will pull their rugs out from underneath them – and we won’t care.  Fact is, come of us may smile – thanks for the debt and the betrayal.  All the Democrats voted for the bill in the House – and only 28 Republicans.  As far as I can tell, all of the republcan leadership. Instead of the Rule of Limited Government, they played the Rule of Politics.  Sure, they got Democrats on the hook for upping the debt – cold comfort for my grandkids that will now get to pay even more back and suffer a lowered standard of living going forward.

Politics over reality – good going all around, chuckleheads!  Throw away any semblance of priorities – we can have it ALL – until the money runs out and then it will be like train hitting a wall of cement 100 yards thick.  You think you’ve seen a disaster?  Hah!

And the Republicans in the Senate were not much better as Republicans crossed over to assist the Democrats in voting for ending cloture (ending discussion, & debate, 67-31):

  • Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wy.)
  • Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine)
  • Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.)
  • Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas)
  • Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.)
  • Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah)
  • Sen. Mike Johanns (Neb.)
  • Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.)
  • Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.)
  • Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.)
  • Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska)
  • Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.)

and then these cowards voted against bill, knowing that their cloture vote had already passed the bill.

They simply gave up.  They showed us that they were not willing to stand tall when the time was needed to them to not just stand tall but climb on each other’s shoulders to stand firm.

Instead, the Republicans joined with the Democrats to heap more debt on our families.  They gave us up to protect their careers.

And I, and we, should support them again……why?  Broken promises, puffed out chests, and empty words.  Yup, these are the stalwarts we are just PROUD to support!

Debt extra bonus, dontcha know.  Jr Partners of the Democrats.  Jr. Partners of the Welfare State.  Least Lackeys of the Welfare State.
