Why do Progressive Politicans keep yammering about “promises made”?

Once again, from Obama’s Weekly Address:

We make this promise to one another because it makes a difference to

in continuing his points about extending unemployment insurance benefit.

Sidenote: after 5 years, we have no one to blame except for him and the Democrats from the poor results of their economic policies.  So if Obama is making the pitch for yet again for an extension, isn’t that a self-indictment of his own failure?

Let’s get this straight – I didn’t make a promise to anyone about this and I bet you didn’t either.  Sure, I have a promise in my wedding vows to take care of my wife – and then, to my family.  Yes, I will help my friends – there is that implicit bond between friends to do just that.  But to make explicit promises to unknown people?  Hardly.

No, I see this utterance as being part & parcel of the Progressive “The political is personal, the personal is political“.   There are no promises that have been made between the 312 million people to each other – only laws that our elected Representatives have passed.  There is no moral obligation here – only a legal one (and if you want to make the argument that it is a moral one, then why isn’t the Federal Government paying the freight for Special Education that was “promised” by legislation to the States?).

What Obama is trying to narrow down what is public policy and make it personal.  Not that it IS personal – but taking it back upwards to act as cover for his desire that Government exists only to mitigate all of life’s problems – and thus, should be able to spend what it wants and take what it wants.  Morality seems to be only that of “the moment” – and never a regard for the “taking” of next immediate generations (our kids and our grandkids) to pay for the $17.2 Trillion national debut and the $128 Trillion unfunded mandates.
