And one Constitutional reason why the Republicans SHOULD not cave

Our Constitution is under assault like never before – Progressives see it, along with traditional families, the value of self-reliance, and God, as the last impediments to transforming America into their version of Dystopia Utopia.  Congressman Tom McClintock (R-CA) has the following observations on the current Continuing Resolution to keep the Government open (as the Democrat controlled Senate has failed to pass a “regular order” budget since 2009 under Harry Reid’s Majorityship) as well as the debt ceiling crisis:

“Given the ruthless and vindictive way the shutdown has been handled, I now believe that this president would willfully act to destroy the full faith and credit of the United States unless the Congress acquiesces to all of his demands, at least as long as he sees political advantage in doing so,” McClintock said in a speech on the floor of the House of Representatives. “If the Republicans acquiesce, immediate crisis will quickly vanish, credit markets will calm and public life will return to other matters. But a fundamental element of our Constitution will have been destroyed. The power of the purse will have shifted from the representatives of the people to the executive. The executive bureaucracies will be freed to churn out ever more outlandish regulations with no effective congressional review or check through the purse A perilous era will have begun in which the president sets spending levels and vetoes any bill falling short of his demands. Whenever a deadline approaches, one house can simply refuse to negotiate with the other until Congress is faced with the Hobson’s choice of a shutdown or a default. The nation’s spending will again dangerously accelerate. The deficit will rapidly widen. And the economic prosperity of the nation will continue to slowly bleed away.”

McClintock said that while the current impasse began “over a collapsing health program,” Obamacare, “it’s now taken on the dimensions of a constitutional crisis.”

This is the ultimate Community Organizer play of Obama’s life.  In terms of Determined Weakness, there is no losing play here:

  • In terms of Determined Weakness, if the Republicans cave, the Constitution dies a little more – he SMILES as he gathers power unto himself as our Founding Law, our Social Contract, becomes just another piece of dusty history.
  • In terms of Determined Weakness, I believe he will (wrongly) independently decide to use the 14th Amendment to justify opening up Government and continuing to spend what we do not have – and just dispense with Congress and the Constitution altogether.  The US House may well decide to start impeachment proceedings but they will fail overall for even if it passed the House, it dies faster in the Senate than it did for Clinton.  The Progressive Democrats will have taken scissors to to Constitution – and he will SMILE.
  • In terms of Determined Weakness, if no agreement is found, I agree with McClintock – he will SMILE as we would see GM / Chrysler redeux.  There, Obama overrode current law and outright dismissed the Senior Bondholder claims and instead, “funded the workers” – the unions.  The Stimulus went primarily, not to private industry, but to Governmental employees – again, the unions.  Obama has choices who to pay – observe the legal requirements of paying US bondholders or keep paying entitlements or keep paying governmental employees; we’ve already seen this motion picture play out.  He will SMILE as he continues to lessen the stature and power of the United States.
  • In terms of Determined Weakness, he can just spend us into oblivion – and he will SMILE.

Oh, there are variations on those themes to be sure – but he has shown one thing to be sure: the Political Agenda is the only thing and he cares not a whit who he hurts to reach it.  For after all, after 5 years of watching, it is CLEAR that his only goal is to delegitimize the Constitution, traditional American values, traditional American form of governance, the traditional American value of religion, the traditional place of a Civil Society, and turn the traditional relationship of Americans and their Government upside down.

Determined Weakness.
