To those that are using today’s tragedy for their political gain: Molon Labe

Update and Bumped: NBC News via Instapundit:

…But law enforcement officials told NBC News they believed he arrived packing only the shotgun, which he bought last week from a gun dealer in Lorton, Va., about 20 miles from Washington.

Hmm, reported by Instapundit, this seems to have been scrubbed from the report: The officials also said Alexis obtained the assault rifle used in the shooting from a gun safe on the naval base. There’s where he may have also obtained a handgun, according to authoritiesThat would mean more crimes attributable to Alexis – and no background check required or used.

We do not know why evil people do bad things to innocents.  We do not know what lurks in their hearts or in their twisted souls that allows them to harm others for what seems to be random or unknown reasons.  Our hearts and prayers go out to the families affected by this evil man’s decision to put himself and his emotions / reasons before that of the peoples’ lives he took and those he hurt.  Nothing will or can bring them back – may God comfort you in only ways that He can.

Sad to say, the usual suspects already are up in arms (pun intended) about another shooting incident.  US Senator Diane Feinstein (CA-gungrabber), never one to consider that EVIL is the source of this and not a hunk of metal and plastic, said today:

“This is one more event to add to the litany of massacres that occur when a deranged person or grievance killer is able to obtain multiple weapons — including a military-style assault rifle — and kill many people in a short amount of time. When will enough be enough?” asked Feinstein. “Congress must stop shirking its responsibility and resume a thoughtful debate on gun violence in this country. We must do more to stop this endless loss of life.”

The California Democrat is one of the Senate’s leading advocates for further gun control measures at the federal level, including an assault weapons ban.

That is true, but not strictly true;

she (along with that dimwit (and now former) Colorado State Senator Angela Giron, are all for making us like all other countries by disarming the American populace, Constitutional Rights be damned.  Yet, while we grieve for the victims, we don’t even know the entire story yet – and like all similar events, will not know in full for a couple more days yet.  Yes, Aaron Alexis, a 34 year old, Navy vet,  black man, apparently is the shooter, has anger management (his family is claiming PTSD although he never served in combat or in a combat area), and has had past law enforcement incidents with firearms before (rumor: perhaps in the Navy as well).  Some of these that I just listed may turn out to be wrong and others added to this will be right.  Right now, we just don’t know.

What I do know is that, once again, there are those in the Ruling Class that have already judged the rest of us “at risk for doing wrong” simply because of the actions of a dismally few percentage of evil or deranged individuals (and some that are both).  That we are no longer to be trusted with a Constitutional Right that states “…not to be infringed.”  Charles Cooke over at The Corner ends his piece well (emphasis mine):

…On Twitter, Frum wrote sarcastically:

Rule 3: All gun owners are to be complimented as responsible and law-abiding until they personally have hurt themselves or somebody else.

Aha, a Minority Report-style Pre-Crime system! Perfect.

I understand that David Frum considers this to be amusing. But I do not. In fact, his suggestion should be taken literally. Treating “all gun owners . . . as responsible and law-abiding until they personally have hurt themselves or somebody else” is precisely how one should treat free people in a free country. It is, of course, much more scary to conclude that there is nothing the government can do about American gun violence, nor about the ugly proclivity toward evil that a few among us display. But it is also the truth, and the truth is no less the truth because it is unpleasant.

That bolded part is exactly opposite how Progressives look at the rest of us – for some of them, our stupidity alone of calories, chemicals, and sugar means we shouldn’t even be allowed a Big Gulp. But we either are a country of Free People – or not.  Free People must be treated as such – innocent until proven guilty.  Unfortunately, the direction we are going is that we are quickly approaching the tip point in a number of areas where, with Progressives especially, the opposite is being put into place.

While issuing lip service to being a Free People, we have already been judged guilty in our food choices and that must be taken away from us.  We have already been judged to be guilty in our energy choices and that must be taken away from us.  We have already been judged guilty for our religious beliefs and wanting to to openly practice our faith in the public square and that must be taken away from us.  We have been already judged guilty for our free associations in our housing  and that must be taken away from us.

A recap of some stats:

  • Of all deaths from guns in 2011, only 323 deaths from rifles (many are suicides) – ANY kind of rifle (and not just those that cosmetically look like a military rifle).
  • Shotgun deaths: 356 (which Alexis also had with him)
  • Handgun deaths: 6,220 (which Alexis also had with him)

NONE of the changes that have been put forth by gun haters would have made any difference: criminal background check when he joined the Navy, others when he purchased the firearms.  Magazine restrictions would not have worked.

We lawful gun owners are being judged guilty for and by the actions of the actual guilty people – and once again, our Right must be taken away from us.

And they won’t care if Freedom has been diminished.

For they think they know what is best for us – and they will still have the temerity to call us “Free”.
