What are Common Core Standards? How do the Common Core Standards impact public education? Why are so many parents, teachers and legislators now questioning and opposing Common Core Standards? We have some of the leading experts in the nation coming to NH to discuss the many problems associated with Common Core:
Sandra Stotsky was professor of education reform at the University of Arkansas and held the 21st Century Chair in Teacher Quality. She retired in December 2012. She served as Senior Associate Commissioner at the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education from 1999-2003, where she was in charge of developing or revising all the state’s K-12 standards, teacher licensure tests, and teacher and administrator licensure regulations. She served on the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education from 2006-2010, appointed by Governor Mitt Romney. She served on the National Mathematics Advisory Panel, from 2006-2008, appointed by Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings. Most recently she served on the Common Core Validation Committee, from 2009-2010. She was one of the five members of the Validation Committee who would not sign off on the standards as being validated.
Jamie Gass is Pioneer Institute’s Director of the Center for School Reform. At Pioneer, he has framed and commissioned over 60 research papers on education reform topics. Jamie has more than two decades of experience in public administration and education reform at the state and municipal levels. Previously, he worked at the Massachusetts Office of Educational Quality and Accountability as Senior Policy Analyst-Technical Writer and in the state budget office under two Massachusetts governors. In the 1990s, Jamie worked for the Dean of the Boston University School of Education/Boston University Management Team in its historic partnership with the Chelsea Public Schools Jamie speaks on school choice, academic standards, and school district accountability at events throughout the country. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Boston University. He has discussed and written about the problems with the Common Core national education standards, including their weaker academic quality, illegality, and significant costs.
Emmett McGroarty, Esq. is a Senior Fellow at the American Principles Project He works to protect the natural rights of parents and to promote government policies that protect the innocence of children. Mr. McGroarty is one of the foremost experts on the details and effects of the Common Core Standards. He received his bachelor’s from Georgetown University and his Juris Doctorate from Fordham School of Law.
Bill Evers, a research fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and a member of the Institution’s Koret Task Force on K–12 Education, was the US assistant secretary of education for policy from 2007 to 2009. In 2003, Evers served in Iraq as a senior adviser for education to Administrator L. Paul Bremer of the Coalition Provisional Authority. Evers has been a member of National Educational Research Policy and Priorities Board, a commissioner on the California State Academic Standards Commission, a trustee on the Santa Clara County Board of Education, and a president of the board of directors of the East Palo Alto Charter School.
