Chuck Morse – not Peter Bragdon?

“The King is dead, long live the King” – ok, so not so much a monarchy in the NH State Senate (that would be reserved for the current denizen of the Secretary of State (who has been living (politically) the first half of the Vulcan good-bye).  However, Bragdon decided that the LGC position was more preferable to that of being NH State Senate President and so another election was needed (and now will a future election have Bragdon solely concerned with the business of the LGC? There are some names out in the wings on the Republican side that may be biding their time).  Long live [next] King President Chuck Morse; for all of his talk of being conservative, the proof will be in the actions and not the words.  Certainly he has a couple of weighty issues on his placemat – the question will be, what will be the track that will be taken?  Certainly there will be his vote that can show us which but how he handles assignments, interacts with the House and Hassan – let’s go with the political scale:  the fairly moderate Bragdon in the center or more of a truer conservative with Bill O’Brien on the Right?

Pindell has already made his thoughts known:

  1. Things are about to get more partisan in Concord
  2. Good for gambling
  3. Republicans will have more of an in-state leader

For the purposes of this post, I don’t care about #2 but the issues I raised above really depends on #1.  If that turns out that Pindell’s #1 becomes true, it means that Morse has gone Rightward (or, perhaps better stated, walks the talk).  By definition, he will have to disagree with the Progressive Dems of the House, the Progressive Dem in the corner office, and then is willing to do political battle with Dems in the Senate – is that how he will ascend to the throne, to make the split from being simply a colleague to, well, the boss (in a manner of speaking).  As he contemplates this change, will he keep the “Republican bar”:

  • The same (mostly blocking maneuvers)
  • Lower (going along so as to not make waves, showing a sense of “bipartisanship and compromise” in order to just “get things done”; shades of FORWARD!)
  • Higher – even if just 1/3 of the 3 levels of power with a scant two vote majority, will you bring a more conservative edge to the Senate?

Certainly, a lot of folks are watching – and certainly the base is wary right now.  The base, the Conservative grassroots, watches the Stupid Party down in DC:

  • They’ve said “we must kill Obamacare – and ended up with meaningless votes to repeal.  Yet, already it seems that when they have the chance to really defund it via the upcoming Continuing Resolution / Debt Ceiling debate, they all seem to be like the poor souls that were on the Titanic wailing for a way out instead of taking the example of the “Immortal Chaplains of the USAT Dorchester“.
  • Appealing to Big Business and Crony Capitalism, we hear murmurs of Amnesty (by any means / words possible) in any kind of immigration bill that seems to be taking on the shadowy form of the Democrat chest busting “Comprehensive” reform bill – yet again, another bill that we would have to pass to really see what’s in it (and Harry Reid smiles broadly).
  • We see our kids futures dimming as the debt is wracked up, command and control envelopes almost all that is around us, and each traditional value is being replaced here in the Live Free or Die State.

The consensus is building, yet again, at the grassroot level – why the heck should we believe ANYTHING that Republicans say anymore?  The Brits call it “going wobbly” – I think we are better descriptively in this: “where’d your spine go”?  They ask “Will the things be “Live Free” for much longer?  Or will it be merely a token phrase” as we tell our grandkids “This is what Freedom really meant”?  Much is on your shoulders, Senate President Morse – more than what you might think.  They are wary and weary of hearing “I’m Conservative” and then watching the betrayal once again.  What can we really expect to see of you, sir?  You wanted this job, you’ve called yourself a Conservative – will you act to uphold and carry out a Conservative agenda?  Will you dial back, here in NH, the growing intrusiveness of a burgeoning State Borg?  Will you stand athwart the gunwales of the Ship of NH State to the Federal Government and hold to “No Further”?  After all – you have some BIG issues coming full steam ahead at you:

  • Medicaid Expansionyou’ve said “We should not expand”!  Will you stand firm?  Will you NOT bow to the political pressure by the Dems that have no problem in spending other peoples’ money (regardless of its usage) as well as those who do not want you to “follow the money”?   Will you continue your stance or will there be some backroom machinations that will, all of a sudden, bring in the Federal scads of money – with strings attached that will continue the deflowering of Sovereign Statehood.
  • Obamacare is about to invade via the Federal Exchange  which is now less than a month away – and only ONE carrier in the State?  What has the legacy of Senator Jeanne Shaheen’s SB711 now going to do to New Hampshireites?  Will we have MORE Choice (e.g., Freedom) or less, Senate President Morse?  Or must we simply “go along” with the decision that you politician have decided for us like good little children?  Will we have the Freedom to choose what is best for us and our families?  Or simply having to accept what yapping elected officials have spewed and faceless bureaucrats are regulating?

Can I keep my doctor, my specialists, and my hospitals?  Remember: arbitrarily taking away choice from me “for the common good” happens FAR too often lately – and when the Collective is placed before the Individual, there can only be Tyranny.

When is enough, well, enough sir? You get to decide that, sir!  And with those (and many others), what is it that you will signal and message to the base?  Will we cheer – or jeer?  Will we say “Great – we are going to be excited to work in the next election cycle”?  Or will that needed percentage, both activist and voters, seeing DC repilcated in Concord for issues, go “I’ve had enough of elected Republicans putting their careers first; why should I fight for those what will not fight for me“?

“Going along” is not Conservativism to the base; too often the “Art of politics – bipartisanship and compromise” most often results in moving not FORWARD! but to the Left.  The base is tired of having their votes taken for granted and may well withhold them – just ask Romney and just ask Guinta.  Like him or hate him (er, we love him for this), Bill O’Brien moved the State, for the first time in a long time, in a direction where the result was that  individuals got to decide for themselves instead of Concord.

Let not that Knight’s words be heard: “He chose poorly”.
