Notable Quote – George Will

On the on-going fight between Chris Christie and Rand Paul as a proxy for the widening rift between the Establishment Republicans and the more independent grassroots on Libertarianism in the Republican Party:

“Let’s be clear what libertarianism is and what it isn’t: it is not anarchism, it has a role for government,” he said.

“What it basically says is before a government abridges the freedom of an individual or the freedom of several individuals contracting together, that government ought to have:

A, a compelling reason, and;

B, a constitutional warrant for doing so.

Now, if Mr. Christie think that’s a ‘dangerous’ thought, a number of people are going to say Mr. Christie himself may be dangerous.”

And for the record, Will believes that if he continues on with his line of reasoning against the small “L” libertarian leanings, Christie loses in the end.

And the public “gimme, gimme” argument that Christie and Paul are having, as to which State is grubbing for more Fed money than they other?   from my position as the taxpayer whose wallet is being hoovered for all of the states, and as a small limited government guy, the sooner that ALL of the States say “No” to taking the money for “cooperative Federalism” that is actually making the States to be serfs to the Federal Throne, the better.  When on my Budget Committee in my town, I warned the others, the Selectmen, and the School Board “the money is gonna start running out”.  Time to batten down and make the Town more independent financially so when the money river slowed to a trickle, the town folk wouldn’t be looking at big increases in property taxes as the “free money” would have to be replaced.

They didn’t listen all that well – when the State heightened the Retirement payments the Town / School had to pay for public employees, only howls could be heard.  When other monies started to dry up – lamentations and weepings.
