“The know-your-audience philosophy can be a big step down the road to pandering to the audience.” —Edward Tufte
I was essentially the first to write about the naming of a terrorist as a victim of gun violence by the Bloomberg Bus Tour, No More Names. I was at the front of it for a couple of reasons. First, I was there. Second, I got home in a timely fashion and was able to post it right up…just after midnight… with little time lapse. Third, I actually heard it but could not get close enough to identify “who” read off the name.
In subsequent days, I was informed by N.H. State Rep John Hikel that it was Mary Beth Walz who read the name. And today, I was provided this photo….
So What’s in a name? It might be a fair argument if, going into this project one unwittingly reads the names of a thug or a criminal. Arguably, that might happen as not all thugs and criminals make the national news. It is crystal clear, however, that Tamerlin Tzarnaev was a nationally known name and that his infamy clearly followed him. ..but she read the name anyway… Just sayin’
