State Senate Votes 13-11 to Table HB 370 – The Education Scholarship Credit Lives!!!

HB 370, the government-school monopoly, anti-education-choice-bill from the union-owned Democrat House, that would have repealed the education scholarship tax credit that passed last year, has been tabled by the New Hampshire State Senate.    Tabling a bill is not legislative death but it is not unlike locking a prisoner up in a dungeon and forgetting they are there.  Someone might wander down to take a peek, but more likely  than not no one will ever visit it again.

Snidely whiplash - NEA loses as HB370 is tabled in NH Senate

There are several reasons for doing it, but more than likely this was to give cover for folks who would rather leave things as they are.  As a way to end the repeal effort without actually having to vote pass or fail..   Or maybe we got lucky.  I don’t much care what or why, just that it’s done, at least until Fred Lynn the ACLU, and the out of state wing-nuts who are planning to file suit at the bench of left-wing Judge John “I redefined domicile in time for the November Elections” Lewis….who will be asked to block the program on the grounds that it violates the separation of church and state.

Today we are victorious.  Tomorrow is another day.

Bill O’Brien

“I join with many parents and all in New Hampshire who believe that children of low and moderate income families deserve the best education possible in congratulating the Senate for preserving equal education opportunities for those families by tabling HB370, the repeal of the New Hampshire Education Choice Law. Giving parents more public and private school choices when it comes to the education of their children is going to expand elementary and high school educational opportunities for our children and, through competition, will improve public schools. That this will be done, not by more government spending, but by business tax credits and that the program will allow us to use our public school dollars on educating fewer students, makes the opposition to this law inapplicable, unless that opposition is founded on reasons other than what is best for children. We need to see more money-saving, opportunity-expanding programs such as the New Hampshire Education Choice Law on both the state and federal levels.”

(Manchester – April 18, 2013)

Citizens for a Strong New Hampshire released the following statement on the Senate’s rejection of House Bill 370. HB 370 would have repealed the education tax credit program, which allows for businesses to claim a tax credit against the Business Enterprise Tax (BET) or Business Profits Tax (BPT) for 85% of any contribution made to a scholarship organization established pursuant to RSA 77-G. The vote was 13-11 to table the bill.

Derek Dufresne, Spokesman for Citizens for a Strong New Hampshire, released the following statement:

“Citizens for a Strong New Hampshire applauds those state senators who stood up for the Education Tax Credit this morning.

“This program plays an integral part in empowering parents and giving low income families a choice in deciding their children’s education. With the Senate’s decision to table the legislation, the program will remain in place and allow Granite State families the opportunity to decide their children’s future.”
