From The Edge Of Sequestration…Another Update

The Edge Of Sequestration.  Sounds like a Soap Opera, but then it is.  Take the TSA for example.  Janet Napolitano promised we would suffer if Sequestration were allowed to take effect as workers were furloughed. Wait-times at airports would skyrocket because of these budget cuts.

While you’re waiting in those longer lines that may or may not exist, you’ll have extra time to admire the new uniforms TSA bought just before the sequester hit.  DHS signed a $50 million deal to buy uniforms just before the sequester hit, some of which will be made in Mexico.

At least the TSA is giving jobs to Mexicans that Americans wont do…in Mexico.  And back in the US, no one is reporting an increase in delays.

“… the TSA website did not show any major delays at any U.S. airport on Monday morning. Karen Pride, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Department of Aviation, said flight operations out of Chicago’s O’Hare International and Midway airports were normal on Monday.

Passengers said that lines for security on outgoing flights, and customs control for incoming flights, were not any longer than usual.

“Going through customs was normal. For me it took five to ten minutes,” said Claudia Hartono, arriving in Atlanta from Indonesia.

At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport’s main terminals, the wait was less than ten minutes. “It’s the same as always,” said Steve Brodie, 60, waiting to catch a flight to Florida.”

Napolitano is in big trouble now, making Obama look bad.  She’s gonna have to crack the whip and fire some of those TSA employees.  Make sure the lines are getting longer.    And no sense in checking her massive agency for duplication or waste.  And whatever you do don’t change that ammunition from ten years worth to five.  That might free up some borrowed money to keep a few more of those screeners  at their stations.

Wait.  Obama did say it would take time for the pain to start.  Maybe it’s on Janet’s to-do list.  So in the coming weeks we’ll watch as the administration wastes billions while allowing things to get unpleasant.  Well it’s a good thing I can no longer afford to travel, right?

And thank God they had $50 million for uniforms…

The most interesting part of this development is the fact that TSA only provides the initial uniforms for new hires.  TSA employees have to pay for their own replacements.  So why spend $50 million on uniforms if TSA has to cut back on employees so significantly that it will interfere with airport operations?  Why not save some money and cut back on the uniform purchases, especially if the cutbacks mean a lack of hiring?  After all, TSA is apparently committing to spending that money whether employees reimburse them or not for replacement uniforms.

Government at its most efficient.
