Some People Stay In Rhode Island And Vote Democrat – This Is Known As ‘Bad Luck’

Riffing off the Heinlein Quote about reviling success and accepting tyranny, we have this gem via American Spectator about Apathy and Fear in the Ocean State.

It's beautiful, but is it worth the cost?
It’s beautiful, but is it worth the cost?
In Rhode Island, The ‘State of Corruption'{TM}, government has become so expensive, and so oppressive, and has so many dependents (current and former government employees exceed 20% of the population), that even speaking out in favor of pension reform will have the state Mafioso growling ‘Nice little business you have there – shame if…..’

And so it grows and metastasizes – the cancerous growth of government sucking the remaining life from its host- the shrinking productive class in the state. A curious form of resignation, termed ‘Rhode-apathy’, has the residents continuing to vote for more of the same, because (a) they don’t really want to leave, and (b) they are afraid to vote against the machine. This kind of behavior causes, as Heinlein put it, ‘bad luck’.

Once upon a time, Rhode Islanders viewed immigrants to their beautiful state with suspicion, regarding them as newcomers, and calling them ‘transplants’ no matter how long they lived there. Now, people with any hope of a better life are leaving, in droves – NET outmigration from 2003 to 2010 was 25,000 out of about 1 million residents, causing the state to lose about 2.5% of its GDP.

Perhaps we should regard migrants from Rhode Island with suspicion, taking care that they do not ‘transplant’ their foreign style of apathy and dependence on big government to the free state of New Hampshire, Eh Cynthia?
