Obamaphones – free for “the indigent” but man, are we paying the sales folks well!

by Skip

It isn’t enough that the FCC decided that the Rural Telephone Fee was going to be switched paying for landlines and now to cellphones.  It isn’t enough that costs have skyrocketed well beyond even the most “liberal” estimates and that millions have received them that aren’t supposed to (sure, just like with Medicaid, fraud costs are down WHEN YOU AREN’T LOOKING FOR IT!).   So how DO all the phones get out to the “needy recipients”?  Must be at some Government office with trained and professional social workers who swiftly and efficiently evaluate each and every case decided with deliberateness and thoughtfulness?

Not so much:  from CraigsList:

Street Teams & Leaders Earn $500-$2000 A Week (DMV Area)

Thank You for responding to our ad. Let us reassure you that if you are looking for an exciting opportunity you have found it here. We are a major telecommunications provider who has been tasked with the distribution of the FREE LIFELINE government cell phone program.

What is it?

This is a federally funded program that gives people a FREE cell phone and 250 minutes of talk/1000 texts a month, free too. The customer does not pay anything for the phone or the minutes program. You would sign up these individuals using an Android cell phone or tablet as well as an iPad and receive a commission on qualified applicants. The sign-up process takes about 3-4 minutes for each application.

When can I do this?

One of the fantastic opportunities about this job is that you can do it anytime you want. This position is available part time as well as full time. It could be great for moms when the kids are at school, or someone who wants to make extra money. However for the person who is extremely motivated and wants to make real money the full-time opportunity is here right now.

Where can I do this? Agents can go and do these activations anywhere they want. Of course we have some suggestions and in some markets our Team Leaders will be placing agents at specific locations. Here are examples of where our team has had excellent results:

Medicaid facilities, social service facilities, food stamp office, head start programs, domestic violence housing, unemployment offices, VA hospitals, outreach clinics, churches, soup kitchens, shelters, supermarkets, fairs and carnivals.

$104,000 a year to be a Leader in giving away the phones on the street – and our tax money?  Certainly, for something that is supposed to be a “lifeline” and “bare bones” (given the minutes and the texts, I don’t think so!), there certainly seems to be a whole lot of money spilling around.  Remember, this “lifeline” tax brings in billions of dollars a year.  To just blow on street teams.  And we hear that death and destruction, gloom and doom (a veritable DEPRESSION!) will result if we cut a mere 2.4% of the budget if the Sequestration takes effect.  $85 billion out of a $3.7 Trillion / year budget.

Bah!  I see a story like this and go “can we do another Sequestration, on top of this one, next month too?  And the next, and the next?  Until wasteful stuff like this stops?

And remember, where does all that tax money go (can you say crony capitalism and the spoils of politics?) and  what the political outlook is for those that get the phones, too:

  • This stuff is never on their radar of programs to be cut.

The community organizer in chief works the same way that unionized school administrators work in this country, and national health service administrators work in the UK: cut the most visible and painful things first and have the public howling for a tax increase instead of a cut in essential services.

Budget won’t balance in California? Moonbeam Brown cuts police and teachers first.
School budget won’t balance? Cut teachers, not administrators or waste.
Military budget cut 5-10% (temporarily before resuming its rise)? Reduce operational readiness, lay off ALL civilian employees, mothball key parts of our fleet…
Are you screaming to be taxed more yet, or are you beginning to see through the smokescreen?
