Misnomers

“Life is tough, but it’s tougher when you’re stupid.”  —John Wayne

/ê sôlt/ (Verb) To make a physical attack on.  ex. “She assaulted that child!”

(Noun) A physical attack. ex. “His imprisonment for an assault on the film director”; A series of “sexual assaults”.

Weap·on

/´wepên/  (Noun) A thing designed or used for inflicting bodily harm or physical damage. A means of gaining an advantage or defending oneself in a conflict or contest: ex:”resignation threats are a weapon in his armory”.  “The weapons used were a sword, a knife and a ball bat. No firearms were used in the assault.

Do notice the word, Assault  is not an adjective nor an adverb. An Adjective is a word or phrase naming an attribute, added to or grammatically related to a noun to modify or describe. An adverb modifies or qualifies an adjective, verb, or other adverb or a phrase, expressing a relation of place, time. Notice also that “Assault is not an adverb.

Weapon, on the other hand can be nearly anything conceivable. For example a one-gallon Zip log bag is not a weapon…that is, until it is forcibly shoved over the head of another, inducing suffocation, followed by death.  The weapon, hence is a Zip log bag.  A common hammer is a tool used to drive nails into wood and other such substrates. That is until the hammer is used by one to bash in the skull of another with the likey outcome of death. Likewise, ball bats, Michael Skakel Signature line golf clubs. a length of pipe or a large rock…NONE are ever referred to as “weapons,” at first blush.

Only firearms…are commonly referred to as “weapons,” regardless of their use. Many who read my blog entries will now notice that I never refer to firearms as, “weapons.” Always, rifles, handguns or guns. To refer to them as weapons, lacks context.  If we follow the convention above, then a firearm is not a weapon until it is used as such, defensively or offensively.

Assault Weapon is a redundancy. Arguably, a zip lock bag is an assault weapon if I use the bag as a means to end life by placing it over the head of another. The bag is a weapon and it is being used to assault.  Therefore, the bag is is an assault weapon. Likewise with the hammer and the ball bat.

But our liberal, gun-grabbing lame stream media refers to semi-automatic rifles as assault weapons.  Thus, it is necessary to define it…appropriately

Assault Weapon. (Faux Adverb) (Faux Noun) – A contemporary misnomer used by anti-second amendment advocates, gun grabbers and other sordid Charlatans in the press, main stream media to demagogue, mislead and misinform the general public about semi-automatic rifles most commonly chambered in .223 Remington caliber (5.56x45mm Nato ball round); A pejorative term to elicit an emotional response, proselytize hoplophobia and to divide the nation into people who seek “sensible gun policy”(another misnomer) and so-called gun-nuts.

Next time you hear the term, “Assault Weapon,” ask the user of the term to define Assault weapon. This is the only time in life where ignorant asses will answer a question about that which they know absolutely NOTHING about, aside from what they see on television and they will do so with pride and the personal courage of their conviction.
