Notable quote: The horror of Leftist statism.

Some of history's communist dictators: Enslavers and murderers of MILLIONS of human beings.

This is a quote from Peter Hof, an historian and author of “Our Century,” discussing the human attraction of otherwise sane human beings to statism in the form of the political Left:

The rhetoric of the Left is always beatific, romantic, and idealistic. But when we look around the world, whether at present or historically, the Left is consistently our worst nightmare — a horrific collection of all-powerful, centralized governments. Beginning with the Soviet Union…

…we see the pitiful parade of Leftist dictatorships. Dreadful horrors like Romania and Albania are thankfully gone. Today there is still North Korea — a particularly grotesque residue of the Cold War where the dark, deserted boulevards of Pyongyang attest silently to the horrors within. God only knows when the people will mete out justice to the insane Marxists who oppress them, but there will always be those who are seduced by the siren song of the Left: “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.” With this Marxist lollipop, the horror returns again and again. But in spite of the indescribable destruction and suffering, there has been no reckoning, no punishment, no Nuremberg, no closure. There are no solemn monuments, no somber ceremonies to commemorate the multitudes who fell victim to Communism — arguably the most brutal and barbaric form of governance ever conceived by the mind of man. No stone-throwing mobs demand the head of Kim Jong Il, Castro, Mugabe, and others.

The more optimistic among us may hope that, in time, the Great Red Experiment — symbolized by the raised fist which will forever symbolize the 20th century — will serve to inoculate future generations against similar experiments. But the lesson of class-envy is apparently difficult to master. The workers paradise is always just over the horizon and the “useful idiots” march on. “Over mountains of corpses, oceans of lies, and rivers of tears,” inspired and led by the Red messiah du jour — the Maximum Leader, the Great Helmsman, the Dear Leader, the Great Leader, the Paramount Leader — the far-Left marches ever onward….”
