One Holder DoJ Witch Hunt Comes To A Close

Sheriff Joe Arpaio went after local corruption, and thumbed his nose at the Feds, so they tried to make an example of him.  But if there is a Joe you don’t mess with it’s the Sheriff of Maricopa county Arizona.

The DOJ initiated a number of investigations from abuse of power to charges of the Sheriff’s office misusing credit cards.  The end result?

All charges dropped.  And the local US Attorney…even she appears to be trying to back away from the whole thing.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Ann Birmingham Scheel released a statement saying her office “is closing its investigation into allegations of criminal conduct” by current and former members of the sheriff’s and county attorney’s offices.

Scheel, who is based in Arizona, said she was acting on behalf of the U.S. Department of Justice. In a four-page letter to Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery explaining the decision, Scheel wrote that “our limited role is to determine whether criminal charges are supportable. After careful review, we do not believe the allegations presented to us are prosecutable as crimes.”

Emphasis mine.

I get the feeling that Ann Birmingham Scheel knew this was a fishing expedition, initiated by Holder and the DOJ in Washington,  to intimidate Arpaio, wear him out, or to gin up public outcry to get him to step aside.  Joe Arpaio is no spring chicken.  But Joe knew he was right, that everything they did was by the book, and he stood his ground and won.

They couldn’t even fabricate problems to intimidate him out of office.

America needs a few more Joe Arpaio’s.

We did a micro interview with Sheriff Joe in September 2010, here in Nashua.
