Sometimes, it is nice to receive a "thank you" instead of a "where's my...." - Granite Grok

Sometimes, it is nice to receive a “thank you” instead of a “where’s my….”

I’ve mentioned on many occasions here that TMEW and I ran a daycare center for a few years; I also have stated that the folks that were almost always the folks that were the most appreciative of the care we gave to and around their most precious ones were those paying “full boat” prices.  Yes, there were a few that were on State assistance  that also in this category, but mighty few.  For the majority, it was expected and sometimes, more was DEMANDED (and sometimes, got mad when we expected them to do something for themselves / kids).  So, when this came in, a thank you, I decided to post it (emphasis mine, name redacted):

After sitting through countless public meetings, hearing about all of the free services people want (hoping that someone else can get the tax bill) I have to wonder if Thomas Jefferson’s dream of a rugged, self-reliant people is still alive in the 21st century.  One even expressed some anger that they now had to pay for programs that they use.

Worse are the complaints heard from those on welfare who’ve never worked, complaining that they can’t afford broadband internet access, cable tv, “job training,” and a cell phone on what little they get from the government.  The fight over drug testing of public employees (a few police chiefs and school administrators getting six figure pensions) and welfare beneficiaries shows the arrogance of some taxmoochers.  Pee in a cup to prove that you’re not using welfare funds to buy drugs?  They’re too good for that!

I have just received heating assistance–the first public support in my life–and I want to whole heartedly thank the taxpayer for the help.  I’ve passed nearly one hundred drug tests as a merchant mariner, and earned every dollar carrying troops, military hardware, and cargo around the world.  We take care of our own water, security, and EMT response at sea.  Jefferson would be proud.
