You’re Just Not Smart Enough For Free Speech

All things being equal, the only reason Democrats might have to complain about the affect of FEC vs. Citizens United on paid political speech is if it somehow removed some pre-existing advantage they had.  Why else cause such a fuss?  The left clearly has just as much right to take advantage of the current state of political discourse as anyone, right?

So that’s not the problem, is it?

The real problem has nothing to do with money.  Democrats have tons of that and always have.  And they never complained when they could afford more “speech” than anyone else.  So spending money on speech is not the issue.

And it has nothing to do with ‘transparency, not the way they have framed it.  They want “transparency” because without it they can’t use their media advantage to intimidate opponents into keeping their opinions, ideas, and money to themsleves.  Democrats can’t silence groups of donors they cannot specifically identify (see also Obama/FEC trying to force Right wing groups to release donor lists).

So Democrats are not worried about money in political speech.  They are worried about money and speech they can’t control.  They are worried about people hearing any message that is not their message.

Democrats are afraid of free speech because they simply do not think you are smart enough to know what you are supposed to believe.

That doesn’t put much faith in their advocates in the state run education mills, the propaganda from the White Tower Academy, the unions, the media or Hollywood, becasue they are all advocating the lefts narratives.  They are all speaking the Democrat agenda.  And still they are afraid.

From the Democrat President all the way down to New Hampshire’s Maggie Hassan and Kathy Sullivan (authors of speech intimidation legislation right here in the Granite State), and all but a very few and very brave Democrats in New Hampshire, Citizens United was about losing control of the message.   But what message and to whom?  It certainly wasn’t conservative voters they were trying to protect.

Just imagine if some mysterious group ran a series of television ads telling us that abortion is good, that partial birth abortion is a right, and that it is not murder.  What Conservative or right wing Christian would find themselves defenseless against these claims just becasue they could not tell who was financing the message? Not a one.  They’d hear and dismiss it becasue it runs contrary to their values, no matter who paid for it.

Or what if some adds on YouTube told American’s that the Constitution does not limit the government, or that the Congress is not required by law to pass a budget every year?  What if they anonymously claimed that fifteen trillion in debt (and climbing) was actually good for the country, and not at all a fiscal burden on our children or grand-children?  Would those intellectually inferior right wing rubes and dullards  just fall for it and start voting for Democrats?

Nope.  We’ve read the Constitution.  We understand kitchen table economics applies to everything. You can’t spend more than you make, nor over-leverage your future income in excess of reasonable expectations of future income.

So what if the anonymous groups instead claimed that abortion was murder, that a fetus is a life that has rights?  Or that the constitution was meant to limit the power of government, and that Congress–in this case the US Senate–was breaking the law by not passing a budget every year?  And what if they reported the actual cost in taxes per year that our children would have to pay, including babies not even born yet, to cover the cost of out of control spending?

Democrats are too smart to fall for that tripe, right?  No liberal -progressive worth their Marxism would believe it.  So if the Democrats are too smart then it must be the moderates and independents that the left thinks are too stupid.  That has to be it.  Democrats are convinced that the American Middle is constructed primarily of poorly educated idiots whom they can’t trust to vote the right way if they do not know where the message is coming from.

So there you have it Independents and moderates.  While the right is trying to open up political speech so you can use your brains to decide what you believe,  Democrats are convinced that independents and swing voters are morons who can’t think for themselves.   And if they don’t control what you hear, you might vote the wrong way.

For the record, once again, Conservatives, Libertarians and most Republicans (there are a few progressive exceptions) believe that you are competent enough to know what works for you, where you live, in your lifetime–and that of your children.  That you can separate the wheat from the chaff.  And most of us are working to bring more power back to the local level where the messages are more relevant and the money and power are closer to home.

The anti-speech left cannot begin to make such claims.  They are committed to the centralization of power, as far away from you as possible., because in their eyes you are not only not smart enough to know what you believe but you are not smart enough to govern yourself either.  And you don’t even have to believe me.  Just look at their policies.  Look at the kind of government they want.  And ask why they are so afraid to compete in the free market of ideas?

Because they don’t trust you, and if you figure that out, they are finished.
