In answer to James Pindell: how many?

Over at WMUR Political Scoop, James has a weekly feature of Up and Down on which he comments on the political waves of the week past as well as what he can see from the top of yardarm (and we shan’t posit on the method by which he was hoisted up there); this week he asked two questions:

  • How many people will show up to the “Jack Is Back” Tea Party rally in Dover on Saturday?
  • And what accounts for good turnout?

Well, the latter first:  preliminary estimates were for about 100 people.  It’s mid-April, people are starting to get out of the house after winter (mild though it might have been), and after the other TEA Party was held in Manchester on the 15th, I think that was a reasonable estimate.

As to the former – well, GraniteGrok was there as we live streamed the event (and even with Grokster Mike’s MiFi device, the “streaming gods” were looking somewhere else) from Guppey Park in Dover.  Now, conventional political wisdom is to “pack a smaller room than needed” – you don’t want the place to look deserted.  Well, Guppey Park is NOT small – it is a picnic area.  If someone had arrived  for only a momentary glance, one would see the wisdom in that saying.

All that said, my count was between 150 – 200 people.  Not too bad to get 50% to 100% more folks than planned for an event that was not all that exceptionally well publicized.

That work, James?
