DEAR REPUBLICANS... - Granite Grok

DEAR REPUBLICANS…

“There is hardly a political question in the United States which does not sooner or later turn into a judicial one.” ~Alexis de Tocqueville

The Senate has now voted to override the Governor’s veto of Senate Bill 88. The Bill next will come to the full house for concurrence, allowing “Stand your Ground” to become law, if the majority votes in the affirmative.

In a recent entry I gave examples of specific examples of people forced to defend themselves for merely protecting themselves. The most glaring examples being those who “gave notice” to a potential violent attacker that they were in possession of a firearm. Not pointing it at anybody…Not aiming it at anybody…just showing the aggressor that it was in fact present.

Whether a person can, or cannot safely retreat from an aggressive encounter has been left up to the courts to decide for lack of a clear and concise legal definition of what constitutes, “brandishing” or “threatening.” Consequently, people have been prosecuted for merely displaying the presence of a firearm….and with considerable personal financial expense.

“Stand your Ground” is law that now operates in thirty-one other states and, thus far,  the, “streets have not run red with blood,” as the charlatans preach to us. On May 16, 1921, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, opined in Brown v. United States, 256 U.S. 335, 343 “[W]hen upholding the no duty to retreat maxim that detached reflection cannot be demanded in the presence of an uplifted knife…” Better to have a gun and not need it than to need a gun and not have it.

Now you hypocrites who vote against the castle doctrine seem to suggest that people are neither smart enough or intelligent enough to handle such an awesome responsibility, yet at election time, you all imply that only the smartest, most informed electorate puts you into office. Which is it? Are the voters dumb enough to vote for you? Or are the voters intuitive, but you have misrepresented your philosophy to them?

Thus far, we haven’t seen any noticeable reaction from those who have made the RINO of the Week Report, save for a few surrogates here and there who never refute my assertions, but rant on inanely about what a nice and kind person the RINO is. But by a number of indications, a considerable number of Grok readers look to the RINO report with great interest. Grok commentators simply don’t pick the RINO of the Week. A State Rep’s voting record, plied against a core set of conservative principles for fiscal restraint, liberty and values that are an anathema to the Nanny state leads us to conclude who each RINO is.

On the heels of the SB 88 veto override vote pending in the house,  there is a high probability that the RINO of the Week report will feature one or more of those Republicans. For some of those, this will be the one issue that will push them into RINO-dom, while one or two might narrowly escape in spite of such a RINO vote. Names have been submitted by many readers…and the voting records have been reviewed…only the votes (and time) will tell.

And to those couple of thin-skinned Republican Representatives who have e-mailed me in the last two weeks, I give you this little piece of advice: You had best redouble your efforts to communicate with your constituents about the pending vote. Surely, a vote against the veto override will be given considerable weight in consideration of the RINO report.
