Manchester Needs a ‘Full-Time Refugee” Coordinator?

“A large family and Democrats have a lot in common: teenagers and Democrats are always happy spending other people’s money.”  ~Anne Northup, High School teacher and former member of Congress

Liberals love to spend money. No doubt about it. Especially when the money they are spending is taxpayer money. Despite tough economic times for the rank and file taxpayer, City Hall liberals are still crafting ways to generate new spending in an effort to expand the almighty nanny-feifdom of city government.

The Union Leader reported Friday that the  Queen City’s task force on refugee and immigrants, chaired by Ward 3 Alderman Pat Long, will recommend next week that a full-time refugee coordinator be hired to, “track the number and status of refugees here and [sic]how well their needs are being met.”

The recommendation will come next week, despite Mayor Ted Gatsas’ June 23rd announcement that he would seek a moratorium on future refugee resettlement in the city.

So why does Long and his committee want to generate another bureaucracy? Long tells the Union Leader’s Kathryn Marchocki, “It would give the city an idea of what needs aren’t being met and how we can meet those needs. Then we could direct…money to that need and right now we don’t know,”  Now thats’ rich…I can hear the cash register noise in my head as my taxes go up for this new spending. And you know what else he tells the Union Leader? “The position could be financed through a federal grant the city expects to receive.” Classic! Spoken like a true, “tax and spend” statist liberal.

What have we learned from federal grants? Well, they suck, for one thing.  It is without any doubt at all that the creation of such a position will be a permanent position…Full city benefits package, good salary and most likely, filled by somebody’s relative that needs a job. When the federal grant money is no more, these will be the same tax and spend hacks that will put this into the budget to be funded by city taxpayers through yet another tax increase.

Long then speaks off of the other side of his face and with a solid hackarama-style partisan slap qualifying a “structured moratorium” that would allow for relatives of refugees to be reunited with their families. Who would oppose that perfectly reasonable proposition? As if Mayor Gatsas’ moratorium would not make such allowances for families to be together and intact?  Please… But we would still need the full-time Refugee Coordinator… and I would be willing to bet the coordinator will need a budget…perhaps a staff?

Forget the refugee coordinator. Manchester does not need it. If city government wasn’t so rife with partisan, self-serving hacks like Pat Long, it would have a far more communicative and postive relationship with the plethora of agencies that provide outreach to refugees. The refugees and the taxpayers would be better-served.
