Given no honest men – “what do we do?”

Well, that was quick!  Maggie responded via a comment here:

Skip – thanks for picking up on this…it’s much appreciated!

I wanted to follow up on your question, "could we find a group of people equal to the task?"

Unfortunately, if such a group were to be created, there would be maneuvering and posturing and all sorts of shenanigans just determining WHO would be selected.  Each group/special interest that hoped to have a particular provision that catered to their own issue would put pressure on others to select their chosen one.  That person would then owe their position in the group to that special interest – and we’re back to where we are today with our current crop of politicians (well, most of them…).

Let’s face it, our current elections show we’re more likely to elect people who promise us things rather than ones who promise to adhere to the Constitution.  These current outcomes don’t bode well for selecting such a group.

Yes, it’s a pessimistic view – but it’s also realistic and, I believe, accurate.

I guess the next question then, is:  what do we do?

Indeed – what do we do? For the real question is not can we find honest men to write a new Constitution, but can we find men that can simply defend and govern according to the precepts that have already been given to us?  Ben’s famous words "A Republic, if you can keep" loom loud and wavering at the same time; loud for the legacy that has been handed to us with the blood of men willing to sacrifice themselves, their fortunes, and their families for simple ideas of honor, freedom, liberty, and God created Rights.  A country born of ideals and principles.

Yet, seemingly one that has decided, as Charles Krauthammer wrote, to go into that long decline.  Much of it, I have sadly concluded, due from turning from those Constitutional precepts and warping them out of usefulness with the Progressive / Socialists ones built on a false sense of equality of outcome outpunches that of equality of opportunity, that the common good should always trump individual freedom, and top down central planning is far superior than the free market.  And yes, I continue to blame our Educational system that continues to churn out students of the "Blame America First" clan and unable to know the gifts of our Founders simply because they are not taught (and not taught, seemingly, by teachers that by and large might not be able to teach them in the first place).

What we CAN do, however, is for those of us who hold up those original political beliefs of our nation to search out, support, work for, and to vote for those that are best aligned with those ideals and that are willing to put themselves, their fortunes, and their families at risk to run for elected office.

As my friend Jeff Chidester says, not Founding Fathers, but Defending Fathers.  And in this day and age, Defending Mothers ("for hell hath no fury like…"  heh!)
